French Onion Soup - a No No
Well, I have always liked to learn the hard way....
We have already pushed most of the limits with our newborn, Sam. He is just over a month old and already he has been to 6 states!! We went to my cousin Randy's wedding in Philly and stopped in Baltimore to visit Angie and Rob on the way home. So, on that trip, we went through NC (of course), Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland - and we took an accidental tour through the middle of Washington D.C.! Well traveled little man.
So, who would think that after all of that - a week of driving and staying in hotels with 4 adults and a baby - the worst fussiness we have gotten from him is due to French Onion Soup? Man o Man it is about to kill me!! He has had so much painful gas, all he does is cry. And, like a smart mom, it didn't hit me that I had done this to him until 2 days later. Good thing I figured it out because I was going to have left-overs for lunch.
Here is to hoping that he works out this gas soon!

5) As a former breastfeeding momma, I can tell you this: breast milk is made from your blood, not what you eat. Therefore, Sam's gas is all his own! I have two very gassy babies and now two very gassy children, and simethicone every 2 hours was vital. We used it the entire first year of their lives and still do on occasion, if they eat loads of veggies or any gas-producing foods. However, we do buy the generic brand because Mylicon is a tad pricey.

Have patience and hold him a lot up on your shoulder...I used to rub Gwen's back to help her and sing her little songs. Galvin just wanted to rest against my chest. Good luck!

6) I had never heard that breast milk was made from your blood so I had to go and google it and I found this:

Breast milk is made from specialist sweat glands; milk (human milk, cow's milk, whatever kind) is basically enriched sweat.

Nutrients and other substances do diffuse from the blood into the milk across permeable membranes, but blood does not normally enter into the milk itself.

Not only that - but having breast fed 3 children - I have to say what you eat does make a difference. If what you eat can change the way your breast milk smells and tastes to your child, then it obviously can affect their tummies and cause them gas and discomfort.

7) Another former BFing mom here. kellymom.com is a great website for nursing moms. And I wholeheartedly agree with what she writes (here: http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/gassybaby.html ), which is that yes there may be some things that affect your baby's gassiness, but it is far less common than urban myth suggests. Before holding off on French Onion soup for as long as you BF, I would definitely try it again just to see. The best thing I found for my gassy baby (luckily only my second, not my first) was to move his legs in bicycle fashion.

8) I can only tell you what the doctor told me about gas in infants, which is that no one is 100% sure how much what you eat affects your baby. I had one child who seemed very affected by things like onions. She still has a very sensitive sense of taste. My other two were just gassy all on their own. Nothing I ate (or didn't) had any affect at all. But with my first, if I ate an onion, a pepper, garlic or chocolate, a few hours later she was howling. No fun!

10) Angi, that might have been true with you and your babies, but I assure you, some of us had/have babies with tummy problems that were/are directly related to momma's food consumption!

11) The other day I went to see my friend Kate with her new baby in the hospital. I was joking and said, "Did they give you a book of instructions for the baby?" and she said "Yes and it is very helpful."
I think it is kind of wild that there are so many different kinds of advice you hear for children. I don't know how any of you do it. Good luck with the gas! I have seen the bicycle method and people using gripe water...

12) Yes! Please send Dave this way! We will feed him!
Thanks everybody. I do feel a little better now - I feel a little less hopeless. I tried the bicycle and that worked for a minute. We have been giving him simethicone once in a while, but after reading up, I realize we can give it to him more often.
Hopefully we will make it through this. I am not sure my hair will though - it is getting more gray by the minute!

13) Watch out for broccoli - that is the one thing I figured out gave my kids gas. I kind of gave up trying to figure it all out though and just came to the conclusion that I have gassie kids. Good luck and keep it up. Sometimes formula is worse!
