day 2...
today i basically just saw two court hearings and didnt do much work on my personal boat case.
the first involved a man who was a pharmacist and sent in fraudulent claims for prescriptions and pocketed 500,000. he came in today to plead guilty which would reduce his sentence
the second case which i thought was going to be really interesting was a man getting sentenced in a child pornography case. it was the final leg and the judge was going to decide his punishment, but his lawyer wanted to bring in one witness to help reduce his sentence...it was an expert who studied the man and his family and was trying to convince the judge that his three children would have attachments issues and be harmed by their father being locked up. Examining and cross-examining the expert took over two hours though and i had to leave for a softball game so i didnt even get to see the part where my judge is in action deciding.
right now all the court hearings are still new and interesting to me.
my favorite part in the whole process though is watching the interactions of everyone present. for example the difference when there is just lawyers representing a party and they clients aren't present compared to a lawyer with a client present. also in both of the cases today both men had their families present and watching. i like to watch the families and their responses and understanding of what is going on during the hearings.
also i'm very impressed by my judge and how neutral she sounds and stays through out all of it. i have a lot to learn cause i feel emotion towards the different parties and cannot just follow the rule of law.
