One Hit Wonders
I have never played softball before but a couple months ago I got an invite to be on a team and I decided why the hell not! In Hartford there is an entire league of Travelers employees. On each team you can have three guests that are non-travelers employees and I filled one of those spots. Surprisingly not on my roommate's team..who is a travelers employee but a team of some of his other co-workers.
So far we've had about 5 games I think and our standing is the worst team in the league!!! BUT we always scream, cheer and have so much fun that it doesn't matter when we lose...even the time when it was by almost 40 runs!!! we always decide to keep playing when the ump asks if we want to stop because of the mercy rule.
last night though was the first time it was not fun. Not because we lost miserably like always, but because of our relationship with the Ump. He took it VERY seriously and we got lots of calls of illegal this or that and outs none of us understood...we kind of play to just drink and be merry but last night there was nothing merry!
I had to play catcher the whole game..which scares me cause I always think I'm going to get the bat or the ball in the face...but last night the ump was so into it that when he would scream ball/strike/ YOU'RE OUT it would make me jump!
luckily the best part of the night is after when we all go to a mexican restaurant, margaritas, and turn all of the bad into happiness!!

1) My company used to have one of those--summer and fall teams. This year, no one wants to get involved. I think it speaks volumes as to how people are feeling right now in the company. We all seem to want to get the job done and go home and forget about work. Maybe even the fun of softball isn't an incentive. Either that or everyone left in the office is a slug and not into sports. Me, it's the temperature. I couldn't manage playing a sport that involves sun and heat as elements in the game. Good luck with your team--sounds like you have fun no matter!

2) Softball is how Bill H and I met. I was the Captain of the dialysis unit softball team at the University of Colorado Medical Center. Bill was completing his nephrology fellowship. I recruited him to be on my team. We would play different medical center departments. The personalities definately matched the department. When we played the pediatric team they were very silly and fun. The surgical team were sticklers for the rules and quite frankly a bunch of !*# .oles. The psychiatric team had to over analyze every play. Our team of kidney specialists loved to drink lots of beer. This is a true story!! We had loads of fun.

3) I think you summed up those medical departments quite well.

4) It's sad watching the dynamics of my office change. When I moved here 6 years ago, these folks loved softball and were very competitive if not the best when it came to scoring. They also participated in the Hood-to-Coast run every year. This year they can barely generate enough interest in an ice-cream social for fun. People are tired and stressed and frustrated with all the changes. I hope things stablize soon. It's sad to see it change so dramatically. I thought these folks were so cool with all this energy and enthusiasm for sports and being out-of-doors. It's very "Portland".
