Wendy's Wackiness

I had an eventful Tuesday night because it was the final game in the NBA series and the Celtics took it!!!!

I went out to the bar w/ some law school friends early and then we walked over to a sports bar West Wings to watch the game. The bar was packed and there was a lot of excitement. It was so hard to get a beer that when we did they served it in a styrofoam coffee cup!
The highlight of the night though was our trip to Wendy's. My friend Jessa was so close to gone and needed some food to recover and right next door is a Wendy's. I walk over with her and go right into the dining area and go up to the counter. We scare this one guy b/c supposedly the inside had been closed for hours but it was somehow unlocked but he was nice and jolly. BUT there was an older lady screaming at us to get out so the guy quickly said ok what do you guys want I'll put it together for you and go through the drive thru. So Jessa quickly said her order and we go outside. Then a little confused because we walked to the Wendy's we kinda walked behind a car at the window and stood there. We saw our friend through the window and he was being all sneaky putting it together and then you hear the woman screaming again that we can't walk to the drive thru.
So next thing you know we're kind of hiding next to the window where the lady can't see us and I'm sneaking my debit card to the guy at the register. The whole time you can hear the woman yelling but next thing you know we get the bag of food. It was this secret operation for fries!
But the end of the story is a sad one, as we are walking away the guy comes out and says he got written up for doing it! I felt so bad cause he was just trying to be nice, seemed like no harm but that lady was not happy!

1) I used to work for Wendy's waaaayyyy back in the day, and only lasted, like, two weeks because their "write up" policies were completely stupid--I hate stupidity. And although their food is good, their customer service sucks, as you experienced, Amber.

After my "stint" at Wendy's, I went to work for McDonald's, ending up a Swing Manager within six months. I remember when my old Wendy's manager came in with her family. She couldn't believe I was in charge of anything there, and my regional manager, who happened to be in the store at the time, told her that I was one of the most responsible people at any of her locations. Retribution felt good! Oh, and we would have totally served you fries at our McDonald's - we used to let the bands that had played at the local civic center stop in after closing to eat and relax before hitting the interstate. Very good customer service back then!

3) You should write a letter (on law firm letterhead) to the manager of Wendys praising the outstanding attitude and friendliness of the employee. Tell them that about the mean manager too!
Bill and I were once staying at a resort in Calastoga California and I went into town to get a massage (the prices at the resort were outrageous). I got to talking to the massage therapist and she told me she had been trying to get a job at the resort, had an application on file, but they rarely had openings and jobs there were very competetive. Before I checked out I went to the resort spa and left a letter with the manager telling her about the wonderful young woman (I gave her the name) I met in town and the fabulous massage I got. 2 weeks later I got a note in the mail from the massage therapist telling me that they called her and offered her a full time job with benefits. She said the spa manager mentioned my letter during her interview. I was astounded that # 1 she found my address on the check I wrote and # 2 she wrote me the thank you note and sent it to me. It was a life lesson for me. Never underestimate the power of a simple letter.

4) Leslie, the pen is mightier than the sword. My friend, Paula, taught me that years ago. You never know who you might impact with a letter--either one like yours for a positive reason or one (as I used to call it "nice-nasty") that outlines a problem with service or product. I've gotten discounts, free product, apologies, and occasionally impacted someone's career as you did. Great job!!

I agree--I would write to Wendy's. I wrote them them via email (not the same impact, I know) and did get a reply on a product they had briefly and then discontinued. The reply was polite but didn't really encourage me they would make any changes but if another 100 people had done it, a group might have gotten their attention. People tend to avoid confrontation or writing letters but they do make a difference! That woman will probably remember you the rest of her life.

5) She was a single mom with no health insurance. She mentioned in her note that her son had asthma and she worried constantly about him getting sick and the posibility of him being hospitalized.
