help!

This is my third attempt to write this blog....my computer bombed yesterday afternoon and then again last night!
Over the last month my computer has been overheating easily and then randomly shutting down and it will go through this process of trying to restart over and over again but fail for a long time.
It's at the point where I can't rely on the computer staying on, and I live on this computer. I take all my class notes and everything for school is on it.

So the solution is that I need to buy a new laptop. But I dont know much.... does anyone have any suggestions or at least know things I should make sure it has...certain amount of ram or whatnot (i'm clueless on the computer terms).
The two things though are that I need it very quickly and cheap. I know there are good deals to be found on the internet but I can't wait for it, so I'm kinda hoping to be able to go into a store and buy one. The second thing is that I'm looking to spend at the most I guess around $550...so I'm not looking for anything snazzy, just to do the job!
Any advice would be so helpful or if anyone knows brands to stay away from!

1) I'd get someone to check it out. Might be a bad fan or something that is allowing the laptop to overheat because it isn't being cooled properly and it will shut down. I had a laptop that did that and it was a replacement fan and back in action. Surely there is someone around there who can look at it for you. Most Best Buys and other computer stores will look at it for you if it isn't under warranty and should go back to the mfgr. for repair.

2) Best Buy will always offer pretty good deals with financing and whatnot. Like zero interest for six months. That's how I afforded my new computer, and I got a really good deal on it (HP Desktop).

However, I would avoid windows vista like the plague. It makes me want to jump out the window several times daily.

3) 1. buy and external hard drive and back up your old comp.

2. go to newegg.com for your new laptop (and external h.d.)*

*i ordered a nice 80gig external from them at noon on one day and had it by 11am the next day (with the normal shipping). You can get great prices on there, reviews...and they will rarely sell anything that isn't quality. I think they may have some decent laptops in your price range.

4) wow all of that sounds good....after sitting through class this morning and getting so frustrated i had to do something!

i ended up going to best buy.
I was shockingly surprised with how good best buy was... i dont know much but i walked away with a 1gb for memory and 120 for a hard drive with tax for 455....and i dont do much besides school work and internet sooo hopefully i got a deal that will work!

i was going to try and repair the one i have now but i just don't have the time and i need it to be really reliable because we take 3 hour exams on our own computers. My dad is a computer guy sometimes so he is going to take and try to replace the hard drive for himself.
