Scared!

So I just got this email and it freaked me out and I just need to share it to hope it'll relieve some of my fears!!!!

Special Announcement 10-2-2008: Neighborhood Crime Alert
The following information was just provided by the UConn Police Department. At approximately 7:10 this evening, a law student was walking along Sherman Street. Three males approached him and demanded money and his cell phone. One of the males carried a weapon. The student made noise that alerted neighbors and the three men ran away. Please use caution as you travel the neighborhood.

So basically I live in one of the houses on Sherman Street, I would say there are ten houses or so and then when you get to the end away from the law school and towards the busier road there are a couple of small apartment buildings.
AND I walk from the law school to my house at least a couple of times a day. I didn't even get a parking pass this year b/c its so close that it's stupid not to walk....but what the heck...why is there danger!!!!

AND 7pm isn't even that late... I get out of night class at 9:30pm and walk home all the time! I walk back from the bar at 1am by myself all the time and never think anything of it!

I love living in Hartford and know there are dangerous areas but not right outside my door! I love my street and always thought it was safe to walk back and forth... I'm hoping this was just a freakish random incident, but what am I going to do!
I'm a skiddish person by nature (I often think I hear someone in my room and my roommate has to come in and check for me like a 5 year old even though I'm 23!)

So basically I'm nervous and not happy!

1) Amber, don't ask for trouble. It would be smart to always have a companion when you're out walking. Unfortunately everybody's not as nice as you are!

2) Amber there is no place that is that safe any more. I remember my mom telling me about my uncle and aunt being woke up and a guy forced his way into the house and hit my uncle hard enough to knock him out. His wife has Alzheimer's and was vague then and forgot things and got lost easily but somehow she was lucid enough to hide and call for help after it happened. When the policeman came, he remarked to my mom that he had been a police officer in a city (I think NYC--can't remember) and moved to Mooresville to get away from all the crime and violence. He was "shocked" that such a crime had been committed in such a sleepy little community. I may not have all the details right but I do remember her saying how he kept talking about how unusual it was for such a crime to be committed in that town.

4) All the advice you have received is correct.Being very alert and keeping 911 on your speeddial is more advice. I would add no ipod or anything like that to distract you. Please take a cab or have someone drive you when coming home from a bar late at night. Stay safe!

Amber, I know exactly how you feel. Something similar happened about a mile from where I live, except the man tried to rape the woman. It happened in the morning. She was running. He stopped her. I ran about that same time. I sometimes ran that same route by myself. I was really scared for a bit. I had to change my route, stop wearing headphones and be very aware of my surroundings.

It's sad that we can't even walk by ourselves without fear of something bad happening.

6) Amber: Changing but on a positive note, the local ewenc papers are saying that the "Sheep" is fearing the Husky. Their football program isn't quite as good as their basketball program. The game is going to be on at 19:00 hrs. tomorrow night on one of the cable or satellite channels. The members of the Wolfpack will be pulling for the HUSKIES. Also, the ABC fans will be helping, that stands for: Anybody But Carowhina.

7) I have passed through Hartford several times in my career, and it is a beautiful city, but it can also be very dangerous city at this time. Do you know where the Lighted Cross on the way to Waterbury is?

10) My father gave me hand siren when I was in college. I worked in the art studio till late at night and then I would walk home. I had a siren I could pull a cord out of and toss it. I made the mistake of testing it a few times and the thing would make your ears bleed.

Like these http://www.safetynow.com/personal01.htm

I thought this was great versus something that could be used against you like pepper spray.

11) I forgot about the siren but its really a good idea. That's why I have never wanted to be armed-I'm such a klutz and accident prone I would probably do myself more injury than any creep. When I was at EMU in Ypsilanti, in ancient times, I carried a scalpel but that was when I was young and dumb. The reason was there was actually a serial killer loose between U of M and EMU, several women were murdered. Living so close to Detroit we had a lot of transients and in my apartment bldg 3 out of the 4 apartments had women that had been assaulted in one semester.

13) I agree with all the advice you have received. Are the roomies usually home when you walk back to your apt at 7:00 p.m? Maybe you should call them and let them know you are heading home and then keep their number on the cell ready to speed dial in case of a problem. They could be to you faster than 911. You've now given me more grey hairs (well disguised under a little Loreal, of course). Stay safe!
