Craigslist is creepy part 2

This week we had another bad thing go down and instead of a random law student getting mugged...it was my poor roommate Corey who got jumped instead. This happend a couple days before Biker Ben's bad craigslist experience...and made me super creeped out and hate craigslist.

My roommate Corey has always been the guy who makes an extra buck selling and buying things on ebay and craigslist. Most recently he has been buying iphones and selling them for some profit. He had an ad on craigslist trying to sell two iphones and on Tuesday a guy kept calling him to try and buy them.
They negotiated a price and the guy wanted Corey to meet him in Enfield, which is a town half way between Hartford and Springfield, MA. Corey said he wanted to meet in Hartford and the guy played it off by saying, "Well I've only been there once to take my kid to Wrestlemania so how about we meet at the civic center". At this point Corey heard a kid in the background and believed the guy. The civic center doesn't really have any people around it though and Corey thought it was kind of sketchy so he suggested the train station thinking there would be a lot more people there. So they agreed to meet at 6:30pm.
Through out the day while at work he was emailing with his brothers and his older brother, Jesse, thought it was really sketchy and wanted to come along with Corey. Corey honestly wasn't even that worried because he meets people all the time and does a lot of craigslist deals, but agreed to have the brother come.
So next they're driving downtown and call up the guy who said ok I'm here but I'm actually around the other side of the train station because my girlfriend is getting pizza (behind the train station is a road with a couple restaurants and bars, it's not populated like the front but there are people around). They see the guy leaning against "his" car and park. They walk up to the guy and start talking about the phones and the deal when out of no where two guys come from behind and start punching Corey and Jesse in their heads. It was all a quick commotion but Corey remembers seeing the phones drop and when he tried to reach for them one of the jumpers actually got them and ran off. At this point Corey chased after the guy and his brother was a little bit behind. They ran past this bar and up into a parking lot, at this point the guy slows down a little bit by this van and Corey catches up to him.
THEN Corey's brother also catches up and at this time.... pulls out a gun! (This is the part of the event that is just nuts to me...because its just a huge shocker he had a gun!)
So the guy sees the gun and his attitude changes, they're yelling at him to give the phones back and he says he doesn't have them. He eventually goes by the van because he had dropped them underneath it and gives the phones back to Corey. At this point they just tell the guy to get the hell away and then call the cops.

So my poor roommate came home pretty shook up and shocked by the whole turn of events. It scares the crap out of me and I hate craigslist! I think he is unlucky that this happend to him, but very lucky in the turn of events... he wasn't really injured, the other guys didn't pull any weapons and he did get the phones back.
Also... good news is that he said he's done with craigslist for awhile and is just going to stick to ebay.

1) Glad he wasn't hurt this could have turned out tragically.

2) Sounds like the story everyone thinks could happen but no one thinks really happens. Pretty scary. I guess they are lucky Corey's brother had the gun though that could have gone wrong too. I guess being iPhones they are valuable and in great demand and that makes them worth stealing.

I'm glad Corey is ok and the story ended up ok. Good blog of yours and Ben's to make people think and if they do craigslist to be very careful.

6) That is craziness! I hope Corey is okay.
Matt has had great luck with CraigsList but he sells things that are kind of specific; a Jeep, tool lock box, truck camper top, and just the other day a bass amp. I don't think those are things that people can resale easily. So I guess the rule is to stick with ebay for the 'hot' items?
I am glad these stories are being shared. It is like a humzOo buyers beware.

7) Are you kidding me???? Corey's brother has a gun? Did they get the license plate # of the van? What a crazy, scary story. I hope they are letting Craigs List know about these hoodlums.

8) I would be surprised if craigslist doesn't have a disclaimer somewhere on that site "use at your own risk" to avoid any legal problems. :)

9) I agree that there is a difference between "hot" items and other things, because Corey also sells a lot of road bike parts and things and I guess he's had people even meet him at our house for the inexpensive items.

I don't know exactly what he would of done with the gun, I know Corey said it was the first time his brother has ever pulled a gun and it was scary.

The van nor the car the guy was originally leaning against belonged to the muggers... when the police were there they say other men get in both vehicles and leave.

An an update on the criminal investigation is that the detective called Corey and said that they were able to actually trace the phone number to MA and are currently contacting TMobile for records

10) thank goodness for our Big Brother world with easy identification. No more old days of being able to disappear after something like this with any information that might help.
