Someone new is in charge

I got up this morning and went on a walk before work. I had been planning to do so for days, but every morning I'd wake up and this voice in my head would tell me, "You had a late night last night. You should keep sleeping." or "This pillow is awfully comfortable. Are you surrrrrre you want to leave it?". It's a very convincing voice, but this morning (after a couple snooze button uses) I overcame it, put on some workout clothes, and headed to the park.

I walked at a pretty fast pace around the boulevard. Twice around is one mile. My mind was wandering as I walked and suddenly I realized I was on my way around a second time.

"What's going on here? I thought we were just going once around??" Lazy Voice was back and wanted an explanation.

"We're going around again," I told myself.

"But there's no time. We have to leave for work soon. We'll never make it."

"Then I guess we'd better run." So I did! Or at least jogged very quickly, which is like running for an amateur like me.

I set a goal for the trash can at the far side of the boulevard and kept running even though Lazy Voice tried desperately to convince me that we would surely fall over and die right here if we didn't stop. I made it all the way. I turned around and headed for home, proud in my new ability to ignore the voice that tells me to quit.

So, long story short, someone new is in charge and I think I like her!

Sounds like she has your best interest in mind. Great job!!

This is a great blog, Ames! I can really appreciate the "two voices." I fight with myself every day about getting on the treadmill. I am SO GOOD at talking myself out of it!! It's a fight every day. Sometimes the Lazy Voice wins and sometimes the Healthy Voice. Good luck with your walking and don't listen to that Lazy Voice!!

When all of us in either Re-hab or Walking Programs we have two voices. When I was doing my Intense Therapy earlier this year the two voices talked to me every day; however, I knew that to get back to where I am now I had to listen to the Do It Voice. I did listen and to the Do It Voice and ended up better for it and I still listen and do my exercises but not as often I should. Nancy be careful on the treadmill because Bev is an intense treadmill walker and we found yesterday that she may have to have Orthoscopic Surgery in the near future.

Thanks for all the encouragement guys! It's going to be hard but I'm going to work on this until the lazy voice becomes so quiet I can't even hear it anymore!
