To make a point...

2 of the part time "children" work out of my toolbox at work. I don't have a problem with people using my stuff, as long as they clean it up and at least make an attempt at putting it back in the right place. I'm not the most organized person in the world by any stretch of the imagination , but obviously driveline removal tools don't go in the same drawer as wire strippers.

However, one of them started getting into the habit of walking up with a handful of tools and dropping them in the biggest available drawer, supposedly to put them up as soon as he was done. Asking nicely stopped it for about 2 days. Now I was tempted to deal with this with a full-blown Walter Sobchak "I said mark it ZERO!!!" fit (minus firearm), but elected to take a calmer route.

Turns out nothing says "Please put my things back where you got them" quite like silently slinging a tool found in the wrong place for the eleventeenth time across the building and giving the offender a brief death stare before walking away.

1) Smokey my friend, you're entering a world of pain.

2) If your correctional tactics work let me know. I have a partner in life who has left more tools out to rust than I can count. I was "raised" by a very strict Dad who would not tolerate someting out of place so I feel very frustrated and actually have bought and "hid" my own special tools.

3) I have someone living in my house, too, that can never find anything because he doesn't put things in their proper place, and no, I'm not talking about our three year old - he actually tells Daddy, "No Daddy, that doesn't go there!" Too funny!! Oh, and I am also interested in how your tactics hold up.

4) I recommend borrowing something the offender considers important, such as his car keys, or an index finger, and gently placing it on the business end of a hydraulic press.

For the record, I'm absolutely horrible at keeping my own tools in order - I've got projects from the basement to the second floor, indoors and out, and equipment scattered every step along the way. Nothing reminds me of senility like losing a screwdriver that's still in my hand.

5) Glad to know I'm not the only one to lose stuff that I'm holding.

So far it's working, but with a holiday weekend and the resultant 'brain in neutral' effect they seem to have on some people coming up, the jury is still out.

6) EyePulp-when I used to wear glasses I "lost" them so often I had to go to the dollar store once a month to stock up but most of the time they were ususally on top of my head.

7) I saw a cool thing with glasses the other day. Some kind of magnetic ends so you lock them when you hang them from your neck but then pop them apart to wear them. Some woman who worked at Whole Foods was wearing them. Looks like a cool invention for glasses-wearers.

8) The best fix is Lasik eye surgery. It is going on 6 years and I don't regret it and have probably reached the break even point since I don't have to wear glasses. I read with my left and drive with my right.
