American Idol Recap, March 25, 2008

I'm a fan this season. Not of Seacrest, Paula, or Randy, or some of the cheesy elements, but I do love good musical talent, and there is quite a bit of it to spread around. Yes, I do like Simon about 75% of the time. He gives the most content in his evaluations and doesn't struggle as bad with wanting to be popular.

We're down to the top 10. It was a better night than the past 2 weeks have been. Contestants picked a song from their birth year. I was surprised how many of them I had never heard from the 1980's- the years of being rushed around to basketball and football practices ad nauseum listening to Q94 and EZ104.

A recap:
Look out: Ramiele Mulabay, Chikezie, David Archuleta, Jason Castro. Mulabay was sick, Chikezie went with a ballad, Archuleta picked a cheesy song (Simon nailed him on it!), and Castro just sounds like a broken record (a very talented guy, just a limited song style).

Pretty good: Syesha Mercado, Carly Smithson, Kristy Lee Cook. Mercado had her best performance yet. Cook stays in the game another week with "God Bless the U.S.A."

Wow: David Cook, Michael Johns, Brook White. Cook is the overwhelming favorite to win now. Johns had his best performance yet. Brook White did the Police's "Every Step You Take" on piano in a really fresh arrangement. Ah, the 80's... when they used to sing about really important stuff like stalking. I like the personalities of all three of these contestants, so it should be fun to see one of them win.

Here's my final 5:
1) David Cook
2) Brook White
3) Michael Johns
4) David Archuleta (don't underestimate the pre-teen girls vote)
5) Carly Smithson

Agree, disagree?

I'm thinking that either Ramiele or Christy Lee need 'da boot tomorrow night, and Paula needs to lay off whatever she's poppin' these days. Here are my final five, IF it continues to be about SINGING: 1) David Cook, 2) Brooke White, 3) David Archuleta, 4) Carly Smithson and 5) Michael Johns.

IF it ends up being a POPULARITY contest, here you go: 1) David Cook, 2) David Archuleta [yes, that pre-teen girl vote], 3) Jason Castro, 4) Brooke White and 5) Syesha Mercado.

Oh and by the way, David Cook was BRILLIANT tonight!!

I think you have to put David Archuleta in the top five. He's been consistently very popular. Dialidol.com puts him in second place after tonight's vote, right after David Cook. They put Jason Castro and Chikezie in the bottom two although I'm secretly pulling for Chikezie although he won't win it. Brian, I agree with your top five and I can see any of them winning although it will probably be David Cook or David Archuleta. They've got some great talent on Idol this year!

I like David Cook a lot, and really want to like Brook White, but I hope she shows me something other than a sobby Alicia Keys. She also seems to have a slightly limited range - she had trouble with the "high notes" during Let it Be last week, but that's really only a problem when considering the crazy belters Idol voters favor. So far I think she's awesome, but I do need to see more.

Seriously, Paula is drunk 100% of the time. I feel like I'm at a bar talking to the drunk girl who is trying to convince you she isn't drunk, but really can hardly stand. And Simon - please, please get a new stylist. Orange tan and chest hair is no longer sexy. Thanks.

Yay for fellow Idol watchers! I'm just getting into it - it's easy to get hooked!

Yes, Casey, it is easy to get hooked!! I've been watching for about five years now and this year has got to be the best I've seen overall. I also like Brook White a lot - she's my favorite. I don't think she's going to win, but I do think she'll easily have a music career, maybe in country?

Wow, I only had Paula down for possible drunkenness about 45% of the time. Have you all enjoyed the use of instruments this year? It definitely changes things... I wonder if it gives any of them an extra advantage in the minds of voters...

Yes, I like the instruments IF they can play them. So far, the only ones who have proven this are Brooke White and David Cook. Though in Idol's first season, I don't think Justin or Kelly would have done well with instruments, and yes, I've been watching this long.

I can't wait to read your recap of tonight (April 1), Brian. I thought they all did a decent job and it's getting harder and harder to pick the one who will be eliminated. My favorite is Brooke but don't know if she can go all the way.
