Mother-in-Law
The two hole outhouse.
Just sitting here thinking about the no electricity, outhouse only, log cabin on the lake with the obigatory slaming screen door, that we inherited when the Mother-in-Law passed away. When my wife was a kid she and her sisters liked the family getaway retreat in Gwin, Michigans Upper Peninsula, happy to chop wood and carry water, and wash up in the sauna. They had old smelly couches and overstuffed chairs in the living room with four double beds in the attic. Just think, everyone sleeps in the same room. The kitchen with its hand pump for water, big wood fired wood range for cooking plus it was fired up to give off heat durning the cool evenings. It had silence, solitude and simplicity, and it still has it to this day.
The above photo was taken in 2003 when we last spent a summer there with all the Grand Kids and their cousins. They were so young and full of energy. Now they are full of energy and growing youngsters.
This Mothers Day got us to thinking of taking a roundabout road tip in July from North Carolina to the UP and spend a month on our "Golden Pond". Its been 6 years since we stayed there for an extended time. And yes, the smelly couches and chairs are still there, plus the mattress. A day or two airing them out, and we can
be back in our own childhood, of chopping wood, lightning the sauna and then the skinny dipping to cool off. I can hear the wife screaming now, "Norman bring me my tea". More than likely she will have to call me on the cell phone, cause I'm going to be at "Jacks Hideaway" at the four corners. Yes its time for us to revisit our childhood, and think of Mom.

1) Sounds like a great place. We all need a Golden Pond to go to and remember all the good things as well as find new wonderful things. The UP is a fantastic area. Definitely need the screens though. :)

2) Oh, wow, that sounds so much like the old cabin my great grandmother and her husband built in the mountains of Colorado. We used to spend every weekend during the summers up in that cabin. Almost everything you said was a memory for me, too! Very cool. Thanks for the flashback.
