Skunk Dog
Two days before Christmas my husband was supposed to get off work, load up the dogs and drive to my parents' house. I'd gone down a few days earlier to help get ready for our big holiday dinner.Anyway, just before he left he called me and sounded a bit upset. The house smelled like burnt rubber. He said the smell originated from our mudroom, but the only electric device we have plugged in out there is our freezer. It was working fine. He didn't know what to do. He hated to leave with such an unexplained odd smell. After checking every possible source and finding nothing he decided to leave.
The drive down is approximately 4.5 hours. The minute he walked through the door my mom, dad, and I knew the exact root of the smell evil.
Skunk Dog.
Somehow my husband drove that far in a closed up in a car with a dog that had been sprayed by a skunk and didn't even realize what had happened. Sometimes I wonder.
Anyway, we bathed her 4 times that night even trying tomato juice and a couple of other suggested remedies.
She smelled like apple-scented skunk.
Then tomato-scented skunk.
Then man-scented skunk (we tried S's body wash)
Then just plain skunk again.
Meanwhile we hid the pup in the far recesses of the house while 25 people gathered on Christmas eve. Luckily no one got sick.
Eventually the smell faded....a bit.
Until yesterday when she got wet. Oh My Goodness! What a smell! Wet skunk dog.
So we tried one more trick....baking soda, peroxide, and dish detergent.
And it worked!!!
Good story. Glad you finally found a solution!! Never heard of that remedy before.
i could totally see this happening in my life!
She's beautiful by the way.
