1) Speaking of IQ tests, Ethan was tested for preschool today. And he got in, but not because of his language/cognitive scores. He flat out refused to do a lot of the motor tests as well as the hearing test. He almost refused the vision test because they put glasses on him to block one eye. I have never seen him turn a deeper shade of red. He couldn't deal with the glasses. I ended up having to cover one eye with my hand. Most parents just stayed in a certain room while their kids did all the testing without them. Not my kid. Nope. Couldn't be without me. I'm excited that he made it because he really needs the socialization, and you know...the separation.
4) I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the whole MENSA stuff. Frankly, I am highly skeptical of any "IQ" test. and maybe it's that I don't know what or have never seen a "real" IQ test.
5) IQ tests are a great measure when used correctly. It does provide a pretty good estimate of a person's cognitive abilities. Now, some of it is based on education & exposure (i.e., Vocabulary & Arithmetic), but a lot of it is based on how quickly one can process information & rational thought (i.e., Picture Arrangement on the WAIS).
They are not the end all, be all of assessment however. I would never take just a mere IQ test & use it as a final basis of intelligence in a person. They are really telling however. Sorry, but the kids w/ the 75 IQ will struggle in the classroom when compared to a child w/ an IQ of 120 or even 100.
MENSA..... I think it's interesting that one test on one day can determine if you are accepted as a member or not. I met a guy once who claimed he was a "card carrying" member of MENSA. When I asked to see his card, he didn't have it. So, not "card carrying" then in reality. He was also a major doochebag & barely finished college. I think that about says it all.
I guess my feelings on MENSA can be summed up w/ this:
It doesn't matter what your IQ is, it doesn't mean a thing if you don't do anything w/ it.
And.... You may be a "genuis" to MENSA, but you may still an a-hole to everyone else.
I'm glad to hear that he will be attending preschool. I know you were really hoping he would get in. :)
I think he will really enjoy it- you know once he gets used to the fact that you won't be attending w/ him.
Sounds like something you really should be taking pride in :)
I'm glad there are still people out there who try their best to do things right!
