Challenging Weekend Ahead!

I am doing well and still in a positive frame of mind. Down about 8 lbs. total, continuing on my own program. I have been pushing myself extra hard at the gym this week, as I will be going out of town tomorrow for a weekend family event out of state, and know my gym time will be missed, and my diet will....let's hope not suffer.

My challenge lies in my darling mother who is one of the most wonderful cook's on earth. While I know that I have the WILLPOWER to avoid certain things and to continue eating very healthy, I don't know what my options will be at meal time. If it's not there to eat, then...?? I have packed my protein bars and a few apples for the plane and snacks while I am there. I hope that will be enough to suffice! NOT that I intend to live on that, don't get me wrong, it's just that I want to make sure I have alternative options when those greasy ham loaves hit the table and the cheesy potato casserole.

My family is all overweight (FAR more than me) and have never really been much inspired to healthy activity - other than being very hard workers both indoors and out. As far as recreational exercise? Forget it. In fact, I am on of 3 (two brothers) and I am the only one who played sports as a child. Go figure. That has carried into adulthood for me too, and it makes me feel good to remember that MY kids see that, and that MY kids are active. They get the message.

So family, here I come! Hope I can be strong!!

Just let your family know what is going on and they should be supportive and help give you healthy options. Remember that if you fall off the wagon one day to just get right back up and start eating healthy again and nothing will be lost. We are all human!

And you don't want to deny yourself fun and enjoyment. My family had a tough time with me becoming a vegetarian and occasionally gave me some frustration about what I ate or didn't eat (we are talking early 80s here--not the "cool" thing it is today with so many people!). I would occasionally eat something because someone was so thoughtful to cook it and wanted to treat me. I wouldn't have hurt those feelings for the world. But, inevitably I'd get back to my own world and lifestyle and get things back to normal. Enjoy yourself, let people know you are working to eat healthy and aren't "denying or starving yourself" and they will adjust and hopefully support you.

When I am on vacation or eating out I play a little game called "half". I'll only eat half of any meal or half a sandwich instead of a whole one. I was recently in Las Vegas with a girlfriend who was trying to lose weight so we ordered one entree and shared it. We saved money and a lot of calories. The only thing we didn't split was martinis. Well..nobodys perfect! :)
