Itty Bitty Goals for a Big, Fat Chick
1. Walk on my glider for 10-15 minutes every day. I know this doesn't sound like much, but it is for me. I have one of those Tony Little Gazelles...this thing is THA SHIT! It allows me to "walk" with minimal impact on my knees and ankles while watching TiVo, listening to my iPod or staring out the window watching squirrels...whatever... Hot or cold, rain or snow...makes no difference because I'm in my livingroom! It folds down and fits into my hall closet. It's great!

2. Don't drink soda pop like it's water. This goal includes all soda pop, including diet soda pop. I know, everyone's wondering why diet soda pop is a no-no. Well, most diet soda pop is made with either NutraSweet (aspartame) or SPLENDA (sucralose). These sweeteners will jack up your blood sugars worse than regular sugar does. Granted they contain significantly less calories than sugar, so you consume less calories, but they make your body think your blood sugar has gone up (when it actually hasn't) so your body produces more insulin which makes your actual blood sugar plummet...giving you low blood sugar and making you crave sweets. Do you know what happens to most dieters who crave sweets? WE EAT THEM!! (screams) Then we feel bad about that Snickers bar and go drink more diet soda pop. Several studies have shown that people who regularly drink diet soda pop actually gain weight...not lose it.

3. Drink water like it's water. This goal also includes unsweetened drink mixes and instant tea sweetened with stevia and/or maltodextrin. These are natural sweeteners that will not fuck with my blood sugar like Splenda and other artificial sweeteners.

4. No more high-sugar, refined carbohydrate crap food. Since this is all most Americans eat, this one is going to be a bitch. It's everywhere...food made of nothing but fat, salt, bleached flour (no nutritional value) and chemicals with a shelf life longer than most of my relationships. We eat it and don't even think about it because we see everyone else doing it. If we actually thought about it...we wouldn't touch that shit. It's toxic.

5. Remember to take ALL of my vitamins and medications. I was recently given Exenatide a.k.a as Byetta to add to my daily medications. It's an injection that I have to give myself in the stomach/abdomen. I know! EEEEEEWWWWWWWW! When my doctor first suggested it I was like HELL YEAH then he said it was a shot and I was like OH FUCK NO! ...that was 2 months ago. I reserached the gastric bypass surgeries I had considered and decided that I would try to do this myself without having someone cut me up. So, when I went back to see my doctor in December, I decided I'd give the Byetta a shot. (pun totally intended) Yes, yes, yes...he told me it was a tiny needle...that I'd barely feel it...that it wasn't even as bad as the lancet for my finger-poker device I use to test my blood sugar...blah blah blah...I was so totally not buying into that shit... LOL Well, it was all true and now I feel like a big weenie for not having done it sooner. Only occasionally does it hurt and that is usually because I have accidentally hit a blood vessel just under the skin. Even then, it's not horrible pain...just a bit of a pinch.

So, these are my goals...one day at a time I am going to get down to a normal body size and hopefully overcome diabetes and maybe even learn how to lessen the effects of the PCOS with weight management and common sense.

1) Admirable goals and attainable. All sound nutritional sense too. The diet pop is a well-known problem as well as all the refined carbs and diet sweeteners. Keep up the good work. Any exercise more than yesterday is good exercise and you will add to it as you feel better.

3) Good Luck Kitten! I love your attitude and your language cracks me up. Keep writing about your journey. You will find there are a lot of folks with similar goals here at the zoo. I'm glad you are trying to do this without surgery.

4) Do you think you could try to give up soda cold turkey and drink water instead? You would see some instant weight loss if you could. I never thought I could give up soda but I did and you can too!! Good luck with your plans! Weight loss is a big problem for a lot of us. You're not alone.

6) Nancy, when did you give up soda?! Hooray for you!

Kitten, sounds like you're educating yourself about food, eating REAL food and avoiding all the crap out there. Really, I think that is the key. And you're right, we are bombarded by all sides with processed-food-crap, including at school, from kindergarten on. We have to re-educate ourselves about food, as well as so many other things in life to be healthy. Good luck!

8) Kitten, I just read your other blog and realize you have a much larger battle to fight than just changing your eating habits. Damn, you have been through it, girl! Hope you can manage to get your body in balance - and I DO believe eating real (whole) food, as close to it's fresh state as possible, will help you find that balance. Good for you, for getting off that damned tack! And, again, GOOD LUCK!

9) You can totally do this! Sometimes health is the best motivation. I was sick last year and was put on a strict diet and watched the lbs melt away. And I agree 100% about the soda; my urologist actually blamed a great deal of my problems on soda--both diet and regular. Keep us updated, I know you'll do great one step at a time!

10) Kitten, I have been soda free since Jan.3. I have to admit I am still not over the craving but I am satisfied now with a cup of herbal tea. I don't have any problem drinking a lot of water. I am adult onset diabetic and have reduced my meds from insulin, to oral, to now just on metformin and my doctor is helping me get off that hopefully in the next 6 months. I have not stepped foot in a fast food joint since Jan.3-I think I am most proud of that.I love McDonald's-or I should say I use to. I have tried to convince myself that all that stuff is poison. I also have resolved some really bad digestion issues by cutting out red meat and have actually felt repulsed by it. There are all kinds of good ideas on this site. You certainly are not alone and it sounds like you are taking the right steps. Remember to set small goals for yourself. Just getting to the point mentally to start was the hardest for me. Now I enjoy the challenge of making our meals healthy but really delicious. Let us know if we can do anything to help you. You go girl!!!!
