The Buddha From Berkley

Last summer I searched in vain for an affordable stone Buddha to sit at the top of the backyard waterfall we put in. I looked on the internet, at garden stores and even ventured to an Asian import place in Massachusettes. It was very discouraging to realize how much they cost. Then my husband and I flew out to the San Francisco Bay area to watch Biker Ben cross the finish line across the Golden Gate Bridge ending his 4,000+ mile bike adventure. We stayed with my husband's cousin and her husband in Berkley. By chance we wandered into a shop that was changing locations and had a beautiful stone Buddha that the owner didn't want to move to the new location. It was marked down 50%. Even with the cost of shipping it by truck cross country it was a fraction of what I would have paid on the east coast.
Now Buddha sits proudly at the top of the falls, thanks to Ben and a friend who somehow managed to get the 400 lb. statue to the top of the hill.

1) That's a cool story. Apparently that Buddha was waiting for you to come get him and give him a home of honor. He looks great there!
2) Handelman falls looks amazing!
3) Cool! I was just in Berkeley today. And we are looking for a buddha. Never thought to look up there (Berkeley being North of us). They must be hella expensive out there if it was cheaper to ship it all the way across the country!! (BTW, I have a very good friend who lives in Newtown, CT. And we've been up toward Litchfield. It is beautiful country where you are.) Your waterfall is gorgeous. I hope to have one someday, but we wanted to wait until the kids were much older.
4) girlcarew, the name of the store was "What The Traveler Saw". They carry items from all over the world. Next time you go to Berkley check it out. The kids might enjoy seeing some of interesting stone figures, Buddhas and wooden animals they carry. It is quite unique. The owner would probably remember the crazy people from CT who shipped a Buddha cross country.
5) Too bad the Humzoo Express didn't exist back then. They could have moved that Buddha in no time!!
6) Somehow I missed this one. The Buddha is beautiful! I have a small one and he takes care of one part on the garden and I have St. Francis in the back who watches over our dearly departed pets.Because this house is old I have used alot of old tools and rusty stuff. Every year I try to convert more space to low upkeep gardens and try to buy only things that will self propagate. I don't think I could ever live in a condo-I love my space and having a place to play with my flowers.
7) What a great effect! Buddha is perfect up there! sherri
