Weekend in Vermont

I gave my husband the best present for Fathers Day. I left him home with a whole weekend to do whatever he wants completely uninterrupted. I am such a good wife…yuck yuck! I headed to Vermont for a couple of days with a couple of longtime friends, Lisa and Lori. We met when our sons started kindergarten and we have shared many adventures over the years. Lisa and her husband Rick bought a cottage on Lake St. Catherine in Wells, VT and have been happily bringing it to life over the past several years. It is absolutely adorable.

The previous owner whittled these ducks across the woodwork in the kitchen.

This weekend is the bi-annual girl’s getaway for some hiking, relaxation and eating.
Hiking Day 1
There was divine intervention today when we somehow missed the advanced trail we were seeking. The intermediate trail was plenty tough enough. It was made much more difficult by a torrential rainstorm the day before. There were a lot of slippery rock ledge and tree roots. Our hike took us to the summit of Mt. Equinox. The elevation at the top was 2,800 feet and the views were beautiful.

We celebrated the safe return to our car with our traditional cold Corona.

Lisa booked post hike massages for us at The Equinox Hotel in Manchester.

We had a great meal that required Lisa to wear a bib.

After dinner we headed back to the cottage for an early night. Zzzzzzzzzz

Hiking Day 2
The weather was a little overcast and cool so we bagged the plan to kayak this morning and instead drove to the town of Wallingford to do a hike called White Rocks. It is an enormous rock fall area that must be the result of a giant avalanche.

The sun came out and it turned into a spectacular day. We made a stop in Manchester for some retail outlet therapy and then headed for home. I love Vermont.

2) I kept saying Wow to myself as I read this blog. You travel to some of the most beautiful places. I loved your friend's cottage and that retro dining room set is a real treasure. The spa wasn't too shabby either. We girls need to take good care of each other.

5) My DH and I went to Vermont for a wedding 2 years ago...first time for us both. It was....an experience. It was GORGEOUS. Beautiful country. The "locals" were, wow...so different than we anticipated it was weird. We had a blast, they were friendly, cordial, and fantastic. But faaaaarrrrr from what we were used to. It always amazes me that the "reaches" of our own country are so different from each other! As I said, and awesomely, odd, amazing experience!

7) Vermonters are very different. Not in the least bit helpful. They don't like "Flatlanders" invading their space.

9) I'm pretty sure I've done both of those hikes, but never planned ahead to have a beer waiting in the car. Good idea. Is White Rocks the one where there's ice in between the rocks all year round? My old company hosted a sales meeting at the Equinox many years ago. Classy joint!

10) I didn't see any ice but I wouldn't be surprised to find it up higher than I climbed. The beer has become a tradition. Most of my hiking is done in Southern Utah where there is nothing better than a cold beer on a hot day. Unfortunately the Mormons, don't agree so finding beer can be a problem.

11) Actually, the place I'm thinking of had ice at the bottom. There was the big cliff of rocks with a stream (I think) at the bottom. The crevices in the rocks near the stream still had patches of ice in the in the middle of the summer.
