Scott Hits a Quarter of a Century

Twenty five years ago today I lay in a bed in a labor room at our community hospital awaiting the birth of my first child who would be named Scott Alexander. Scott is my maiden name and Alexander was Bill’s grandfather’s name. Coincidentally, that labor room would 20 years later become my office at work. One of the most vivid memories I have of that day (besides the pain) is that my favorite soap opera at the time, All My Children, was playing on the television during my labor.

After a long hard labor (natural childbirth – what the heck were we thinking back then?) a beautiful redheaded bundle of joy arrived. As his parents, we delighted in his every movement and action. And captured on video were all the milestones…crawling, standing and walking. I would meet weekly for a playgroup with eight other new moms and it soon became apparent that Scott was not like the other children. When the toddlers were babbling and saying simple words, Scott was talking in sentences. Instead of pushing the magnetic alphabet letters around on the fridge he was creating words and sentences. Perhaps that was the beginning of his love of puzzles. I learned later that some of the other moms thought their children were delayed because of him. No, Scott was just way ahead with cognitive and verbal skills. In kindergarten when the kids were learning their letters, Scott was sneaking Hardy Boys novels into the classroom. His love of reading and learning continued through his childhood and into adulthood. It was no surprise that he chose teaching as a career.

Scott’s braininess is just one of the facets that make him an interesting person. He also has a wicked sense of humor and wit. If you’ve read his blogs then you know what I’m talking about. If you’re ever lucky enough to be around him, it’s a sure bet you’ll be laughing long and hard.

So I’d like to propose a twenty fifth birthday toast to Scott. Raise your glass… Here’s to Scott, an exceptional, wonderful man. Happy Birthday!

3) Is it coincidence that his pose in the picture is the same as Rodin's The Thinker ?

4) Ha..I have had that photo sitting on a bookshelf for years and that is the thought that always comes to mind. I am going into hiding because he is probably going to kill me when he sees I posted it on Humzoo.

5) I appreciate the sentiment, thank you. Ironically, I am absolutely horrible at chess, and, though it may look like I was deep in thought in that picture, I was in that position because I had no hope of winning. Ever. I am not good at thinking more than a couple moves ahead, in chess or in life.

6) I'm glad someone else feels horrible at chess. I thought maybe I was the only one that felt that way. :) I still love the fact that you wanted to read so early--I was the same and couldn't wait until I could read my own books. I wasn't as early as you but the desire was there! :)

7) Personally, I think my mom is exaggerating. Not only because I can't remember ever liking The Hardy Boys, but also because I *still* don't know how to read.
