Year of Magical Thinking

I read Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didon earlier this year. It was a book that I had bumped into a couple times so when a friend gave it to me (in the box of books mentioned this spring) I plucked it out to read sooner rather than later.

Little did I know I was in for a sad story. The books opens with the writer's husband dying quite suddenly. It then spends the rest of the book describing the next 12 months as the wife tries to come to grips with her loss. I think what I appreciated the most about the book was the way the author described, so carefully, her grief. That doesn't mean that I *liked* the book or the description of grief, but I could appreciate it because it seemed authentic.

The books does spend quite a bit of time dropping names and places that I only vaguely recognize even though half of the memories of her book take place in the Los Angeles area.

All and all, I drudged through the book. At times I would just put the book down and go find my husband so I could hug him, happy he was alive and not dead like the author's spouse. I tend to be a thankful and positive person so this book was very much a change from my normal book topic. For the unique perspective I liked it, otherwise, it was hard to like.

2) I admire you for finishing it. Those types of books are great for what they do but really hard to read. Thanks for letting us know about it.
