One hour sleep breaks

I thought I'd post a blog to let everyone know that we will post new pictures soon, promise. We came home from the hospital on Monday and have been trying to sleep/ nap as often as possible. The one hour sleep breaks throughout the night just don't seem to be cutting it.

Katherine's 3rd birthday was Thursday. She helped me make cupcakes as a special birthday treat and we did our little family birthday celebration that night. We had extended family over yesterday for a birthday party. She is at a fun age for parties. She was so excited to open presents and have cake. It is amazing how much she seems to have grown up when I have a little newborn to compare her to now. She has been a great big sister. Katherie wants to hold and kiss Elizabeth all the time.

Elizabeth went to the doctor on Friday for her one week visit and we learned her jaundice level had risen. She was born 6lbs. 4oz, left the hospital at 5lbs, 15oz. and weighed 6lbs 1/2oz on Friday. The weight gain is not bad, but not quite what her doctor was hoping for... paired with an elevated jaundice number and it meant more frequent feedings. Due to her jaundice she is very hard to wake up to feed and then nurses for about 3-4 minutes and falls asleep again. This makes her feedings last what seems like forever, turning around to start all over again soon after we have finished. Steve has been a great help... not sure how he'll make it when he goes back to work tomorrow.

Anyway, we promise to upload new pictures soon, we are just running on low fumes.

1) Sounds like a sleepless, but happy, time. Katherine sounds like a wonderful older sister. Hope she continues to love Elizabeth as they grow up. Sounds like she will. That has to be tough with the frequent feedings and lack of sleep. As I mentioned before, they say that is why babies are so cute--otherwise parents might not feel up to all that work and sleeplessness. LOL

2) Great to see a picture and read how things are going for you guys. We have similar stories going on with our little Natalie. Her jaundice got high enough that we had to put her on a light therapy bed for two days this week. Those were a rough two days since we were suppose to keep her there unless she was eating or getting a diaper change. Thankfully her levels went down enough and we are finished with that.
Feedings are still a challenge with her falling asleep for us as well. I feel like I am harassing her because I am constantly trying all kinds of little tricks to keep her awake. I will say that she has gotten better....or maybe I am just use to the funky schedule. :) I look forward to hearing more on Elizabeth and comparing stories with you two.

4) Nickie- I feel terrible when we put cold hands on her neck and legs or use a cold wet wipe to try to keep her away, but sometimes it seems to be the only way. I am glad to hear that Natalie's jaundice levels went down and she doesn't need any more light therapy. I haven't checked your site since we left the hospital, I'll have to take a look at your photos!

5) Minch, sounds like things are getting better! I'd highly recommend putting ice cubes in her diaper. You gotta show them who's boss from day one.
