Our New Pool

First off I want to say that the derogatory language I use in this blog is simply to illuminate the ideas and opinions of the culture in which I was raised. Please do not be offended or think that I'm judgmental in any way towards people who own these pools.

Growing up in Arkansas the only people who ever had above ground pools were "trailer park trash". I don't consider people who live in mobile homes "trash" but that is the term I heard used all my life growing up. Moving along....above ground pools were then always associated with low income, classless people who were likely rednecks who bbq'd with their shirts off and swam in their jeans. (again the stereotype I was fed)

When Richie suggested that we get one, because it's been as hot as hell here lately, I was hesitant. I didn't want to be thrown into that same stereotype that existed in my own mind. I caved, though; he was right. It's quite hot and a pool would add fun exercise to our life. I know that our yards are too small and our homes are too close together to get the proper equipment in to have a proper inground pool. I know lots of people who have above ground pools, and they don't live in mobile homes, aren't low income and, generally, aren't rednecks.

I have been struggling with the stereotype in my own mind. I've been concerned with how people would judge me based solely on the above ground metal frame pool in my backyard. Not to mention the half painted plastic patio furniture we have. I can't bring myself to buy metal patio furniture...it would scald you in the summer. After posting about the mishmashed backyard projects coming together (but not quite) a dear friend responded simply with this, "All that matters is that you can relax in the cool water. The rest is trivial."

She is right. I'll be cool in my pool or sitting on chairs that aren't burning my butt or arms. For the first time in 3 years, even though there is still no grass in the backyard, we'll be spending time out there as a family making "trailer trash" memories. LOL

God bless friends who put life in perspective for us!!

I think your friend is right. Anyone who cares to judge you isn't worth worrying about.

My parents lived in Florida and always had an above ground pool. It provided the grand kids many hours of great fun. I sure enjoyed it when I visited. My mom loved it and Dad would bring her coffee while she read in her floating lounge chair.
