Okay, this has exceeded the "blurb" forum. LOL

I'm gonna simply post some passages I've found online with their reference points as not to plagairize. lol

The approach of the Lenten season brings a furrow to the evangelical brow. What are we to do with it? For congregations that follow the church year there is no problem: Christians will do what they have always done. They will use Lent as a time for taking spiritual inventory. Many non-liturgical churches, by contrast, consider the 40 days before Easter to be no holier than any other time of year.

Yet many Christians have not prepared for the joys of Easter by simplifying the life of faith, deepening prayer and Bible reading, practicing Christian disciplines, and engaging in a sacrificial life. A liturgical Lent makes a profound difference in a believer's life. Even if liturgy has not been part of your tradition, you can learn from its practice.

This is a wonderful explaination of Lent from various different views and a history of the season.

I believe that lent is a time for spiritual preparations for Easter. For example, if I choose to fast every Thursday for Lent, then my hunger on Thursday makes me think and ponder on God; if I give up chocolate, then when I want chocolate I think of Jesus and his sacrifice on the cross for my sins. Should we live like this everyday. Sure, but that isn't how it works out. Being a follower of Christ is the most difficult thing for me to do. I fail daily. I fail miserably most times. (I hope that this counts as public confession.) I don't believe that it serves any purpose in trying to determine whether the Lenten season is more or less important than the daily walk with Christ. I believe that Christians should attempt everyday to walk with God. Lenten season is a little different than the normal daily walk with God, not more or less important but different.

Good Post! I especially like your reasons for fasting.
