On May 6, 1954 Roger Bannister became the first person to run a mile in less than four minutes. His time was 3 min 59.4 s. On 21 June, his record was broken by John Landy of Australia, with a time of 3 min 58 s.

Following World War II, President Harry Truman issued an executive order on October 25, 1945 specifying that the eagle face the olive branch instead, as such symbolizing a nation "both on the march and dedicated to peace".
