On May 6, 1954 Roger Bannister became the first person to run a mile in less than four minutes. His time was 3 min 59.4 s. On 21 June, his record was broken by John Landy of Australia, with a time of 3 min 58 s.

Poor Ben Cartwright. All three of the boys were born to different mothers... Adam's mother was Elizabeth, who died in childbirth. Hoss' mother Inger was killed by Indians. Little Joe's mother, Marie died from a fall from a horse.
