Quiz Time

Enough with the practice quizzes. Here is the first round of the new format, which should allow more people the chance to play - and get some work done during the day. When you have all your answers - or as many as you can get - email them to russ@springfieldtrivia.com. Ties will be broken by the order I receive the answers. So if Sally and Dave both get 8 right, but Sally sends her answers first, Sally wins.

You have until noon on Wednesday, July 23 to finish. Have fun!

And remember - don't think of this as a normal trivia quiz where you have to know the answers off the top of your head. This is more of a scavenger hunt. The fun is in figuring out how to find the answers.

1) Musically, what links Alan Greenspan, Hal Linden, and Woody Allen?

2) What song was once banned by the BBC because it may have upset dysphemics?

3) Explain how Popeye was the first on 3rd in NYC?

4) What do sotweed, sparrow camels, alligator pears, and disgrace have in common?

5) Who is responsible for this?

6) The Northwest Ordinance passes. London gets electric streetlights. ASCAP is born. Evelyn Kilgore gets her license. What movie should we watch?

I know - your boss called me over the weekend and told me to change the format. :)

So far I've been steering clear of this trivia. I have a boat load of things to do this week, so I'm trying to not let you pull me under once again. But dang you and your trivia! It's so fun!

I will say this though - I guessed #10 right off the bat, but didn't verify it until just now. WOOT!

I think I know #1 but definitely know #6.

Resistance is futile, Heinzel. You have 27.5 hours. Get busy.

I got 10 too although it took a little staring and thinking. Not sure I'll have time to finish although I'm pretty sure I have 6/10 correct so far.

6 is a good score - maybe good enough for the win on this one.

Actually, now that I look at it again, I think it will take at least an 8 to win. Roughly 24 hours left to get your answers in.

{Correct answer was here!} :)

OK, then I'm tired of this, I'll call it quits at 6 and send you what I have now....I'll ignore the answer above as I didn't have that one anyway.

SA Tenor - Email me your answers. :)

George - One of the questions you answered correctly was one of the two that I thought people would have trouble with. I'm impressed.

I am not very good at quizzes, but recognized #5 easily, I am amazed at the artist.

Which ones Russ?
LimeyGeorge   Tuesday, July 22, 2008
Russ
I figured 3 and 8 as the hardest, and possibly 7 if you aren't thinking along the right path. The rest can be solved with a decent set of Google skillz.
Russ   Tuesday, July 22, 2008
George
So I answered 3 and 8, which one was wrong?

Russ
Check your email.

Well, that was an epic failure. Apparently the new format stinks. :)

Congrats to Scott, who nailed 9 of 10...and George who got 5 right - including the one Scott missed. So between the two people who sent answers, the quiz was solved 100%.

I like the new format better. It gives me a chance to try all of the questions.

1)  Musically, what links Alan Greenspan, Hal Linden, and Woody Allen?

They all play the clarinet.

2)  What song was once banned by the BBC because it may have upset dysphemics?

 From Antecdotage.com:
The BBC has a long history of banning hit songs from its airwaves - chief among them "A Day in the Life" (drug references), "Lola" (an implied Coca-Cola endorsement), and the Sex Pistols' "God Save the Queen" (treason). Why did BBC Radio initially ban the Who's "My Generation"? They feared it would offend stutterers.

[The song was intended to mimic the effect of taking speed. ("Drugs don't harm you," Pete Townshend once declared. "I know - I take them.")]

3)  Explain how Popeye was the first on 3rd in NYC?

Don Zimmer, whose nickname was 'Popeye' was the first man to play 3rd base for the New York Mets when they were formed in 1962.

4)  What do sotweed, sparrow camels, alligator pears, and disgrace have in common?

In the movie "Oh, God!" (1977), God admits that even he has made mistakes along the way...including tobacco, ostriches, avocados, and shame.

5) Who is responsible for this?

This is an installation at Central Park in New York City called "The Gates", by husband and wife artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude.

6)  The Northwest Ordinance passes.  London gets electric streetlights.  ASCAP is born.  Evelyn Kilgore gets her license.  What movie should we watch?

All of these events happened on Friday the 13th.

7)  What man has made a living as a bicycle racer & golfer and still had time for three stints in baseball?

Kevin Costner raced bikes in American Flyers, played golf in Tin Cup, and was a baseball player in Bull Durham, For Love of the Game, and The Upside of Anger.

8)  What is the significance of this building?

This is the Drake Well in Titusville, PA - the site of America's first commercially successful oil well.

9)  How can taking Lexington away from Tacoma result in Solon Mills?

It's all about the zip codes...

98431-38351=60080

Tacoma, WA (98431)

Lexington, TN (38351)

Solon Mills, IL (60080)

10) Where in the world is this?

Red Square, Moscow

A couple of thoughts:

1. I think technically, I got 8.5, since I correctly attributed #3 to Don Zimmer, but thought it had something to do with the Pedro Martinez fight.

2. By saying that people would need at least an 8 to win, I think you may have prevented people from even trying.

Russ,
I completely love the quizzes and wanted to participate in this one, but had a ton of after hours work projects to do this week. I read the questions early in the week and was very interested in the answers. I hope this one round of poor participation doesn't put you off of doing more quizzes.
Thanks!!
