Last week Andrew and I had to get away from...er, I mean we tearfully tore ourselves apart from the rest of the family to explore the Outer Banks. We headed south and took a ferry to Ocracoke Island.

1) Ahhhh..youth. That ferry brings back memories. When I was probably about 7 or 8 my family was on the ferry to ocracoke (outer banks was our vacation destination every year. particularly cape hatteras. each year we'd take one day of the week to go to ocracoke) anyway, on that year it was really windy. as i was waiting for my sister to get out of the bathroom (which if i recall, would be through the doorway and on the right hand side of where her hand is), we went over a wave, it knocked me off balance and i fell in a garbage can that was beside the bathroom door - on the outside of the door. when my sister came out i had wriggled trying to get out and had gotten even more stuck.

she had to go get my mom to help me out. thanks for the memory jogger, SP.

2) Oh man, if only there were a picture of the incident. :)
I had the pleasure of using the ferry WC. Next time I'm going over the side of the ferry.

3) We rode the ferry four summers ago. We went with another couple who had a big Ford pickup. The "perfect storm" came out of nowhere. They don't train you how to handle storms like this in Illinois! We sat in our van and rode the storm out on on the ferry with our doors locked-at Elizabeth's request. Locking the doors as your van is being tossed around on the water is always a good idea. Of course, I sort of was hoping our faithful van would sprout wings like in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Well, we made it to the island which almost was completely flooded. The sand was blowing and the rain continued for some time. Our friends, the Webers, were fine in their truck but we were almost at sea level-literally. The storm finally stopped and the beach was full of shells. It was magnificient. The light house trip was very memorable.
