Do people really still litter?

I was driving down I-40 last weekend and noticed that there was a line of orange trash bags along the side of the interstate. I assume this was from inmates cleaning up the road and that someone would be along to clean it up later. I asked Stephen, "Do people really still litter?" We laughed about the old ads that said, "Give a hoot, don't pollute." However, it really isn't funny to see so much trash on the ground. It makes our great city look ugly and dirty.

I've recently asked a few people if they ever throw trash on the ground or out the window of their car and I usually get an emphatic, NO! Why would anyone do something like that? So, the type of people that I associate with do not litter. Good. But, who does?

I live a few blocks from a park that is next to a homeless shelter. A lot of the folks from the shelter hang out at the park during the day. That place is covered in trash. It gets cleaned up on occasion I'm not sure by who -- maybe a local church group or perhaps the city does it. Either way, the place has multiple trashcans and people continue to throw trash on the ground.

As I left work today, I watched a guy get in his car, throw out a Bojangles bag and cup, then drive off. Why? I just don't understand why?! I wanted to yell, "Hey moron! Throw it in a trashcan or hand it to me and I throw it in a trashcan for you!" He was a really big guy (construction worker), so I thought better of it.

I go out of my way to recycle and compost I buy local produce when I can. I drive a fuel efficient car. Being green is so important to me. I am furious that people show such disrespect for the earth and for others by littering. I know that I do my part and I am sure I could do more. But, I just cannot wrap my mind around what is so hard about throwing your trash in a trashcan! Sheesh!

It is a sad commentary on humans to see all the trash along our highways. Littering is supposed to be illegal - but I don't think I have every heard of anyone being fined or receiving a ticket.

Selena, I have seen them throw down trash a foot from a trash-can. It isn't like it is out of their way to use the trash-can instead of the ground but they do. In both Minnesota and Oregon different groups adopt a section of road or highway and maintain it. Both my sister and mother remarked in both areas how clean the sides of the road is. I'm not sure if that is common practice in all states and cities but it does seem to help. I can't understand why it is needed. I too try to be green and recycle all I can and never leave trash behind--it always goes with me until I can throw it away properly. It takes so little to keep things clean--I don't understand people who are too lazy to care and do their part.

Every so often I'll see someone throw litter and it makes me incredibly mad. But the kind of person that doesn't care about their environment is likely to care even less for my well-being. That's when I day-dream that I'm Dirty Harry and blow their head clean off.

I haven't witnessed someone actually littering in a long time, but I see litter every where I go...parking lots, sidewalks, even in my front yard (we're on the "walk to and from the junior high school" path). Drives me crazy and makes me sad. Lilly (my 3 1/2 year old) is already very aware of people leaving their garbage on the ground...last fall when the weather was good enough to go out on walks every day, she was constantly picking up litter and bringing it home to our garbage can. Apparently some of the teens who go to the junior high weren't taught to respect the earth.

I love the mental image of me blowing someone's head off for littering! Thanks for that, LimeyGeorge!

Will and I , mostly Will pick up trash all the time on our road. WE live kind-of on a back road and we mainly find beer cans, soda bottles, tons of fast food trash and cigarette boxes. Tells you what kind-of people litter!

I am amazed at the amount of litter on the highways and the inside of my car always looks like a garbage can because I can't just throw a bottle away - it has to be recycled - so it end up coming home to go in the recycling bins

What always gets me are the people that dump or stump their cigarette butts out on the ground. Like that's not littering.

I think that people who don't care for themselves, care even less about the enviornment or others. It makes me crazy when I go hiking and find things like trail mix wrappers and empty water bottles discarded on the trail. I want to scream..."Leave only footprints" !!!!

justmeg, Teens are really bad from what I've noticed. My classroom is always a mess by the end of the day. They leave papers, bottles, pens, pencils...When I catch them leaving stuff on the floor, I'll say something to them, and their response is usually, "The janitors will get it." Makes me so incredibly angry.

I've been wanting to blog about this lately also. The other day I was the second car in line at a stop light. The man in the car in front of me rolled down his window and dropped a McDonald's bag and a supersized cup out onto the road. I was livid! How could you drop your garbage on the ground like that and with so little shame that you'd do it in front of many other cars. I was in complete shock. What is wrong with people??

Awesome blog! I completely agree and have never understood why people are so lazy. Most municipalities offer plenty of options for throwing trash away but people would rather just throw it down on the ground. Shoo hit one on the head as well that I find baffling. Smokers throwing down cigarette butts. That is a) gross and b) littering. I am starting a group called Non-litters Against Smoking Litters (NASL). Say it with me, N-A-S-L! Let me know if you want to sign up. We'll be spending our weekends and free time following smokers around and waiting for them to throw their butt on the ground. Then we'll throw their butt on the ground. In theory it's gonna be really effective.

Everytime I'm behind a car and see them throw their cigarette butt out the window I always find myself wishing I could jump out and grab the butt and throw it back into their car. Most cars are equipped with an ashtray for a reason. People are lazy.

Not to mention it is a fire-hazard. We get really dry here in late summer and it isn't uncommon for a fire to start on the freeway in the dry grass--usually from a carelessly tossed butt. Downtown is disgusting with cigarette butts. Here are people who will protest a polluted river and spend $$ on causes for the forest but have no qualms about tossing litter on the street in the form of a cigarette butt.
