Life's Little Ups and Downs
Some may wonder where I've been for so long. Well, one month ago today, Steve fell and broke his left ankle and tore a ligament in his knee. You don't realize how many simple everyday tasks we take for granted until they stop being simple. Day 1: We were sent home around midnight from the ER with an ace bandage & air cast. The declaration was:
" It's just a bad sprain" Next morning - 11am - they call to tell us that we need to come back in. The certified radiologist has found a hairline fracture on the x-ray. Sounds easy, except that we live 30 miles from the hospital in a very old house with 3 big steps to get in or out. We recruited a friend to come help Steve hobble down the stairs to the van & returned to the ER for further tests and treatment. Orthopedic resident enters the picture & decides that his knee shouldn't be swollen to the size of a large grapefruit. MRI shows a torn ligament deep inside which thankfully will not need surgery. Also, modern medicine no longer requires a plaster cast on a simple break, so he's been outfitted with a big ugly black boot fit for a Klingon! Next, the wheelchair enters the picture. No weight bearing for at least 6 weeks. This is mid to late afternoon on day 2 and thinking quickly (a major feat for me) I called a neighbor who is very handy and explained the situation. When we were released to come home a few hours later, our wonderful friend, also named Steve, had built a very sturdy ramp leading up to our back door. He stayed & helped us get my Steve into the house. This was barely over 24 hours since the initial fall. We were happy to stay home & adapt to the limitations for a few days. Check up at Dr. gave him a 3 week break from work and most of that time has been a fog for me. Last Friday, return to work has been a relief for us. Gradual healing and patience are the watchword around here.

So, Humzoo, I've missed you, but thankful for all the help from family & friends.
Life is returning to normal. (Whatever that means)

4) Sounds like a tough time for Steves! Like I said in my rant about bad commutes...there are worse days! :) Sounds like you had one!! Sounds like you have great friends and a super DIY neighbor. How nice for you--I can't imagine what you would have done to resolve all those problems otherwise. Hope Steve is better soon.

5) I know a bit about how he feels - dislocated my right tibia and snapped my fibula when Galvin was 3.5 months old while at a party in Greenview! Had that surgically pinned together the next morning at St. John's, followed by 4-6 weeks in a hard cast, then 10 more weeks in the Klingon boot & wheelchair with no weight on it...that's 16 weeks of immobility for anyone who's counting.

So, happy healing to Steve!!

7) I may be self-imposing a restraining order for Steve against myself since I was the only one around the TWO times in his adult life that he has broken an ankle. I hope you recover speedily. Does 50 feet sound like a good distance? :)
