Baby Bears like Wisconsin

On Saturday...while at a going away party...I was talking with my friend Mindy who is a huge cubs fan...we were discussing the Cubbies odd upcoming trip to Milwaukee. After wondering why MLB would allow such a thing...and how easy it would be to get tickets...I found myself in a car on my way to Wisconsin.

For those who need a refresher. Hurricane Ike wiped away Houston so MLB decided to put the game at a "neutral" site.....they thought Milwaukee....which is 90 miles from Chicago sounded neutral enough.

On Sunday...in front of over 25,000 "neutral" cubs fans...Carlos Zambrano pitched a no hitter.
Steve and I had a fun time watching in our apartment.

On Monday I got up bright and early...jumped in Mindy's car...and away we went.
The ride wasn't that bad...about 4 and a half hours and we were there!

Mindy doesn't joke around when getting seats. She got us 12 rows behind home plate!

We got there just in time to grab a beer, a sausage, some fried cheese curds and see the first pitch.

We had a sick view of the game

Even saw bats fly through the air.

We had some great people around us. Like this guy...

And this guy whose camera was a little bigger than mine...

The drunk heckler behind us even took a picture for Mindy and me.

Soon enough...Billy the Cub showed up. Billy is a mascot of the Cubs.

However this may have been Billy's first time seeing the cubs.
Billy is not allowed in Wrigley field due a no costume policy. He is not affiliated with the team. But he wants to be....so he was throwing out free T-shirts!
By some weird act of god I caught one! Sweet. Here's Mindy posing with Billy afterward.

The game was amazing. Ted Lilly threw a no hitter into the 7th. The ball park is awesome.

Check out the cool slide in the outfield.
During Brewers game Bernie the flies down it after home runs. Since this was a "Houston" home game there was no Bernie
There was no sausage races either.

While at the game....the Brewers...who at the time were atop the wild card standings fired their manager Ned Yost. There was quite the buzz in the stands as everyone's phone started going off with friends texting them.
Here is a picture of him on the wrap around scoreboard...which will never be seen again.

It was fun to see Lou Pinella up close. He has what we call a "keg".

In the end it was a cubs win!!

The more than 15,000 people who skipped work were happy.

And the W's were flying.

It was a great day at Miller Park.

5) Biker Ben, just curious. Did you stop at the Mars Cheese Castle on your way to Milwaukee?

6) Coming from someone that does not watch baseball - your blog makes me wish I liked baseball - but fried cheese curds - no thanks.

7) Fried cheese curds are awesome! Don't knock them till you try them. I felt the same way...gross! Then I tried them and they're actually reallllly good. Especially if you can find beer battered cheese curds.

8) Are they just like fried mozarolla sticks but with cheddar?

9) No! Real cheese curds are not. Still simple though. Just think of cubes of cheese, usually american cheese, dipped in a batter (like I said, I think a beer batter is the best) and then deep fried. Culver's (a burger chain) has cheese curds and they're good, but they're not the "good kind" that I have described.

10) Good ole wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheese_curds

Look at the section on the fried cheese curds.

11) Fresh cheese curds squeak on your teeth when you eat them... they're good but I'd rather eat a piece of cheddar cheese any day over the curd. It's more salty and doesn't really have much of a cheese taste to me. The fried curd is good but really, anything fried (and often dipped in Ranch dressing) is good to me!

You can pretty much find them in any grocey store here (or at the infamous Mar's Cheese Factory, among others) that Bill mentioned. They'll never really squeak though, b/c you rarely get a package that is less than a day old.

12) Cheese curds are one of the hot fair foods at the MN State Fair but a little goes a long way. A few bites and I've had enough. Good but they are very salty and richer to eat than a piece of cheese or even a fried mozzarella stick.

13) LGrant,
I think I read somewhere recently that they have over 70 kinds of "fried food on a stick" this past year at the WI State Fair. Twinkies, Oreo Cookies, Kwy Lime Pie, etc. That gives me a gut ache just thinking about it.

I do have to have some fried cheese on a stick and a corn dog when I go every year...

14) MN lives for food-on-a-stick at the Fair and works each year to find a new one. I can't remember what Carol told me was new this year. She used to love the pork-chop-on-a-stick and would buy a package of the seasoning mix they use on them each year. Not sure if she still does that. Someone (maybe MN) advertised spears of pineapple dipped and fried on-a-stick this year. That doesn't sound too bad--but then I love caramelized pineapple. :)

15) The last time I went to Summerfest, I think I ate 30-40 pounds of cheese curds. They are dangerously good (and squeaky).
