Fill-er Up!

Remember those days where you would vomit a little bit in your mouth when you filled up your gas tank?
Where this country FINALLY began talking about renewable resources....cause driving cars was causing people to become homeless?
Where smart cars were the new Hummers?
Where biking was called commuting...not biking.

I just filled my gas tank at $1.83. A tear slowly ran down my face. I hugged the guy pumping gas next to me. OK, no I didn't, it looked like he hadn't showered in a few days.

What glorious days these are. I will enjoy them while they last.

1) Question: Are people still talking about renewable resources now that the gas prices are back to normal?

4) I still want to get a Prius and I am stilll going to curb my driving whenever possible-its just a matter of time before they creep back up-Americans use your heads - don't fall into the comfort zone and resort to the gas guzzlers again. Show'em that we don't need them!!!!

5) I want the prices to go back up again so the humvees get back off the road and people carry on buying efficient vehicles that you can see around.

8) I agree with George. I almost like the prices higher because people are smarter and not so wasteful. As soon as it started dropping as it is doing, people suddenly started wasting trips again, driving the big gas hogs. I will say that bus-ridership seems steady. We didn't lose a lot when it went down so much. I think most folks are thinking like Dannie and expect it to go up again. Hopefully they will take advantage of the drop to save some $$ for the probable return as well as look at more efficient cars.

9) Gas in Phoenix finally dropped below $2.50 last week and we're steadily falling....yesterday at $2.29 in some places. Yippie!!!

I want one of those tiny cars...the one seaters that runs on battery power and charges in 8 hours. http://www.myersmotors.com/im1/home_full/full_1.jpg

These cars are so amazing!

10) Gasoline is 2.199/gal. at the intersection of I-95 and US-70 in North Carolina as we speak. The first after IKE hit the Gulf Coast it went to $4.199/gal. at one station. We better enjoy it because OPEC says it will $100.00/barrel soon.

11) I get so angry whenever I see a Hummer or the giant monster truck/SUV thing. Have you ever noticed that typically it's one tiny guy and his wife riding around in those? It's never families of ten who have to transport large animals. Way to ruin my environment because of your ego.

//end rant.

13) Us Americans...we have such short attention spans. Not only do Americans care less about oil now that it is not destroying their wallets...but remember Pickens Plan?
http://www.humzoo.com/ben/blog/94/
The one that was going to take our country off foreign dependency to oil?

Well as prices have dropped...so has his plan. It's now on hold.

14) Saw this on our transit system website. At least we are still showing good numbers and ridership!

TriMet ridership continues to set records
TriMet MAX and bus ridership set new records in October 2008:

MAX and bus ridership
A record 9.3 million rides were taken during the month, with 6.15 million trips on buses – the first time monthly bus trips topped 6 million.
Weekly rides totaled 2,065,500, an 8.8 percent increase over October 2007.
40,900 weekday trips were taken on the system, a 7.4 percent increase over October 2007.
Double-digit rush hour trips increases continue – 117,000 trips – a 10.9 percent compared to October 2007.
Weekend trips totaled 361,000 up 8.4 percent over the previous October.
MAX ridership
Weekly rides on MAX averaged 699,700 trips, a 7.9 percent increase over October 2007.
Weekday rides on MAX averaged 111,300 boardings a 3.4 percent increase over October 2007.
Bus ridership
Weekly bus trips increased 9.8 percent over October 2007, climbing to 1,365,800 rides.
Weekday bus trips increased 9.4 percent over October 2007 to 229,600 trips.
"The record ridership we're seeing on our buses and MAX trains continues to demonstrate that transit works in our region and provides a quality alternative to driving," said TriMet General Manager Fred Hansen.

It still amazes me that one man manages Lost & Found for all these rides and people! LOL

15) It won't last long. The only reason prices are down is because consumption has been curbed because of high gas prices. The same thing happened in the 70's. The renewable energy movement began then, and quickly moved to 'fringe hippie type thinking' as prices came down. The biggest difference between now and then, is that our oil resources have been greatly depleted over the last 30 years, and we really are running out this time. Like completely out within our lifetimes. It's absolutely irresponsible and insane for a gallon of gas to be $1.89, and it will not last more than a few weeks. Reality is creeping up on us, as usual.

16) I reserved a compact rental car in Florida over the weekend b/c I had to drive 280 miles r/t to visit my dad. When I picked up the car the rental agent gleefully told me that he upgrated me to a SUV. That of course translated to that's all they had available. I go out to the car and it looked like a Hummer wannabe, it was the Dodge version. I wanted to cry. The gas gauge began creeping down as I drove out of the parking lot. Thank goodness for the decrease in gas prices. I can't imagine what it would have cost me to fill it a month ago.

17) I think they should have been required to give you a gas allowance with a guzzler like that! It should be illegal to upgrade you like that to something that is less than desirable, more expensive to drive, and what they had left over.

18) I had to wait 45 minutes for them to get a car even though I reserved it in advance. I would have complained, but I was already running late so I let it go. I rented it at the hotel...which by the way used the over the top tp method in their rooms...ha ha. Next time I'll get the car at the airport where there is a better selection.

19) I think they take advantage of that. I had one do that to me in Boston once and got a Baretta with power everything. I drive straight-drive and power nothing (though I do have power steering now). I was an accident waiting to happen. Gas wasn't an issue but having such a big car and all the power crap was. I nearly killed myself hitting power brakes with both feet (since my clutch foot likes to panic and go for the missing clutch)

20) I live in a small rural area. There is no mass transit available. I also have three children so riding a bike to the store is out of the question. Also with the way seat belt laws are now I have two still in carseats and if you take size into account the third should be in one. There is no way I can get my three kids into the backseat of an economy car. Now I don't have an SUV nor do I want one. But I do have a minivan and really can't go any smaller. I also don't do wasteful trips places. But sometimes the gas guzzler is necessary. Oh and it is paid for. lol

21) I didn't think a minivan was that bad on gas mileage. And you make a valid point that you require some size for some reasons. It sounds like you are doing what you can to minimize use and maximize your trips.
LGrant   Wednesday, November 12, 2008
22) We're in the same situation. 3 kids in car seats means I have to have a larger vehicle.

23) My van gets about 23 MPG - which I really don't think is all that bad compared to some gas guzzlers out there - but I did note this morning that the honeymoon with gas prices may be over - gas was up by about .12 here compared to yesterday

24) I think my minivan only gets about 18 mpg. Not very happy about that.

25) Gas is down that low in the states?! Wow, when I left I'm pretty sure I was still paying $4 a galloon! Once I figure out how to convert gas prices from Spain, I'll inform you of prices over here!

26) We dropped again here but still higher than most Humzoo folks it sounds like. Starting to sound normal when we are slightly higher as well as CA due to our environmental blends. I think the lowest I saw yesterday was 1.86 (again, the major brands--not the cheap stuff)
