Riding in the Back of Police Cars
Today I rode in the back of a Police car. It was not intended and very embarrassing.
I did a story about the Illinois Department of Transportation...safety in the work zones. I talked with some I-DOT personnel...but to make the story complete...I needed to go to a work zone.
Drove down towards the 6th street exit on I-72.....caught the workers just as they were breaking for lunch. So I waited in my car....30 minutes later got out.....filmed in the 50mph wind (or so it seemed)....went back to car...turned the key....nothing. Looked at gas gage which never lights up and I barely ever check cause they are always near full....empty.
There I was in the middle of I-72 stuck. I called for some back up....the nearest reporter was in chatham and would be 30 minutes. So I waited...and waited and waited...suddenly a Illinois State Cop pulled up and offered to take me to a gas station.
I jumped in the back of Mark's car with a red face. Got to the gas station.....no wallet...but the gas station felt bad for me...and let me pump the $3.48 worth of gas. Mark took me back to the car....once I put the gas in I turned the key.......nothing. Battery was dead.
So Mark fumbled around in his trunk...found some cables...jumped my car and I was good to go. Went back and paid the gas station....and raced back to the station since I was the lead at 5.
I was ready to kiss that state trooper. I owe him my life....since my news director would have had my head.

1) Great way to make friends with a cop. Maybe you'll be able to get out of speeding tickets. Just mention your friend Mike. Oh BTW...it sounds like you have a crush on Mike. Maybe you, Mike, Sue and I can go on a double date.
2) Nice to know that cops do actually have a positive role in society...not that I'm bitter about my past encounters with the law, nope.
