Assassin

I did a really fun story today about a game that has taken over the world of high schoolers. It is called assassin.

The object basically is to hit an assigned "enemy" with a water gun. You can be hit at anytime, anywhere. The only basic rules...can't shoot someone in their house unless you've been invited in, not in church, and not in school.

The game is being taken very seriously. People waking up at ungodly times to hide in a trash can. One kid hid in the back of a car...and then the teens mom got in. One teenager I interviewed said he woke up....and saw his assasin staring down at him from a sky light he had in his cieling....the dude was on the roof.

Good thing this wasn't around when I was in highschool. It is hard enough living through highschol WITHOUT being paranoid all the time.

According to Mike the photog who is in his early 30's....he played it in high school. I just don't think it was quite as organized as it has become these days.

HUMZOO NOTE: It appears this site is a sucess with my relatives. My brother and mom were recent additions to blogging. And in the last 24 hours or so my Uncle and Aunt from Florida and California are both new members. Looking forward to reading their blogs! Check em out.

1) Ben, I just saw your report on the 10:00 news! Sweet. I totally played assassins in high school, but when I played the school hadn't started cracking down on it quite as much as they do now (this was in '04). We didn't play in school, but the parking lots were fair game. Most people had an extra outfit just in case they were "killed" before school in the parking lot. We went to great lengths to win, but never actually succeeded....and we definitely didn't use Facebook as a rule book, because it wasn't really around yet. That would have been extremely helpful! Great story!!

2) I am a veteran of Assasin's. It was probably the only organized sport I played in high school. Humdingers, how about an adult league?

3) Didn't catch the story tonight. What's the Facebook rule?

Edit> Watched the story online. Why couldn't the internets been as cool as they are now ten years ago?

4) I remember when my son was involved in assasin when he was in high school. I scouted the perimeter of the house many times (at my son's request) before he would leave the house to get into the car. I did spot a dude hiding in the bushes beside the garage one time and he promptly exited the area. He knew I was running scout for my son and he had been busted, so there was no use in him hanging around and waiting any longer.

5) This sounds like a great game. I think I'll try it on my brother, Bruce, when I see him in May. . . It's much better than putting fake rats or snakes in his bed at night.

6) It certainly is a much cleaner game than the paintball you used to play. I enjoyed your story, but I would hate to be so paranoid all the time that someone was lurking waiting to get me.

7) Ah yes...the rat trick. What twist are you adding this year?

8) I, too, am a veteran of the Assassin game. I can remember staking out a meeting of the junior invite dance committee and jumping out from behind her car to soak my target. That was fun.

As an adult, though, I'm not so thrilled about it. The neighbor girl plays it, and there was a carload of miscreants parked in front of my house the other day. I should have thrown a water balloon at them.

9) We played a similar game during my sophomore year at college called "Gotcha!" Instead of water guns, we used plastic dart guns. They weren't terribly accurate, so it made the game much more challenging. Basically the only rules were that you couldn't shoot someone in an academic building, or if they were in a group of five or more.

10) I have to agree with Anon Comm on this one. Last Thursday morning, I woke up and was making breakfast. I happened to glance out into the backyard, and I saw three young "assassins" casing the neighbor's garage on the other side of our alley behind my house. One of them climbed onto the roof of the garage, one of them hid behind the garage, and the other one approached the house where I lost sight of them. They waited and waited. Finally, frustrated, they gave up and returned to their car. This was the second time I spotted "assassins" in my neighborhood.

It sounds like a badass game, it really does. I just don't know how I feel about all these youngsters lurking around in my neighborhood.

11) I was just reminiscing with City of Springfield the other day about Assassins. What an awesome game. I once chased a kid through the Penny Lane parking lot and all the way up McArthur on foot to make a "kill." I think I only caught him because he was pretty overweight. Ha.

12) Frankly, I think I'd rather see the young people in and around my neighborhood playing this game vs. hanging out on the corner in their black attire and Mohawk haircuts smoking cigarettes and weed -- not that it's any of my business what they smoke or wear, but it doesn't seem that productive, and they usually end up getting themselves into trouble after awhile due to boredom.
