One Gallon at a Time....

Did a story on gas prices today.....just in case you missed it they are very high. (what would people do without news?)
My angle was how you can save money by doing the small maintenance work to your car.....but the best part of my day was looking for an MOS (man on the street.....read this old blog and be kind to reporters).

Well I found one....and he was awesome.

I approached a guy who immediately said "you don't want to talk to me....I'm only getting a gallon.
Excuse me.....one gallon?

So of course I put a camera in his face and talked to him.
The man was from Rochester....which is an outlying town of Springfield. Since gas prices have gone over $3.00 he only puts one gallon in his truck...and drives it to and from Springfield three times a week for needed supplies.

I asked him: Well how many miles does that one gallon get you.
Him: Two trips.

Not exactly the answer I was looking for but it works. He says he hasn't been to the mall in two years (the mall is on the west side of town...Rochester is east of Springfield.)

To top it off he says he has been in two movies.....as an extra...both which have yet to come out in theatres. I asked him if they paid him........no......well did they feed you?........yes, but they made me go get the food.

Being an extra is a tough life.....and I assume living your life in a radius of one gallon of gas isn't too easy either.

1) That is crazy, funny and sad all rolled up into one. So did you offer to buy him a gallon of gas? You certainly get to see some interesting slices of life on your journey.

2) I just saw him for the second time on this crazy Fox News at 9:00 or whatever. Ben, you're on every channel on my tv. It's freaking me out. Anyway, that dude from Rochester was something else.

3) Sounds like a good blog--how far does a gallon of gas get you these days.

4) One gallon gets me most of the way through the year, with my lawnmower.

5) I have a very small car and I put $52 in yesterday. If I'm real lucky a tank lasts me a week. I envy all the people that ride those little scooters around town. It looks like fun. I guess it is fun until one of those big cars runs over you.

6) I use roughly 15 gallons every 5 weeks. Living close to the park&ride, riding the bus and having all shopping and libraries within a 5-mile radius of my house really helps. I'm grateful for the savings. $52 a week sounds like a rough budget!

7) Commuting to Champaign for school (about 55 miles) is really starting to lighten my wallet. Unfortunately no trains run between the two cities. I did find a charter bus but it's around $40 each way. But, the way things are going, that may sound cheap soon.

8) Champaign is only 55 miles from Springfield? Wow...i've lived here almost 6 months and have yet to make the drive out that way....I'm gonna have to check it out.

9) Sally doesn't live in Springfield. I think Champaign is about 85 miles away. 85 miles of the most boring, uneventful countryside you will ever see this side of Kansas.

10) Yep, Springfield to Champaign is a longer haul than Towanda to Champaign. And Dave's right, it's the most unimaginative landscape that your mind could ever conjure up.

11) You have to admire the man on the street-he has done what most of us need to do.Myfocus is getting about 30 miles/gall. If we don't go to Winston - I can do everything I need on a gallon a week.

12) Gas is ridiculously expensive, which makes me really glad I only have to fill up my tank every two weeks or so. I wish they'd open the bike trail between Chatham and Springpatch back up so I could bike to work.
I'm starting my masters next year at ISU...I'm assuming the train will be cheaper than driving once or twice a week.

13) If you're looking for an unimaginative drive through Illinois, try I-39 from Rockford to Bloomington/Normal. I did that once.
