Boy Scout Take Over
I was a boy scout until about the age of 14 or 15. My last adventure with the scouts was a trip to a remote island in the Florida Keys where 75% of the occupants of the island came down with a pretty nasty violent puke disease. Not my idea of "High Adventure".
Today in Springfield 3,000 scouts, who traveled from as far away as Georgia, marched from Lincoln's tomb to the old state capitol. It ws quite the site and would have made my former scout leader and best friends father Rick very happy. It brought back memories of my old scout days. I spent many years taking one week out of my summer and spending it at scout camp.
While looking at the sea of boy scouts today it made me realize....how funny those uniforms are...especially for the grown men who wear them. One of the photogs said it best...."the shirts haven't changed in 100 years".
During my scout years I came to the conclusion the organization was a great place to channel a boys love for fire. It was the scouts that introduced me to the term "girl scout water" (gasoline).
Anyone else a former scout?

1) I'm a former Girl Scout and a former Girl Scout leader and Cub Scout leader. It was my privilege for many years to take my troop to walk in the Lincoln Pilgrimage. What a sight with all the colors of the flags and uniforms! At least they didn't have to walk in the pouring rain today. And I always think of Bonnie, one of my Girl Scouts who showed up to walk in the Pilgrimage in high heels! She had mighty sore feet at the end.

4) I was booted out of the girl scouts in 4th grade. During a Saturday hike in Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs I convinced a girlfriend to go left when everyone else went right. The fire department finally found us 4 hours later and my girl scout career came to an abrupt end. Pretty funny that years later I became a hiking leader. If they could see me now...ha ha...

5) I wasn't boy scout. I was a member of the less-than-politically-correct Indian Guides of the western suburbs.
