Broken Pedal Saves My Life

I decided it was time to risk my life and head downtown. I really wanted to check out Recycled Records (a rare still alive Mom and Pop Record store). While on Monroe Street...just past the capitol...the pedal on my bike comes flying off...my leg slips down and gets sliced by the exposed metal and I come to a screeching hault on the side walk. As I look at my pedal...it appears some sort of wiring holding my pedal in place came loose and there is no way to keep it on tight. But it being a Monday, and everyone I know is at work I just have to slowly make it back to my apartment on my own. I of course went to the record store first which is awesome. Reminds me of a comic book store my brother used to go to....but all music.

I also stopped downtown AND FOUND THE COOL LINCOLN POSTER I WAS LOOKING FOR!

I made my way back to the west side of town and stopped in Biketek....which I did not realize is basically across the street from where I live. I told them my pedal problem....a dude took it back....and started to frown.

It felt like I had taken my bike to the dentist after not brushing my teeth for three years. The guy kinda sadly looked at my bike and pointed to almost every part telling me problem after problem. "Whoah...you need new tires...this chain needs to be changed, it could eat away at your back gears, looks like this needs to realigned."

He then told me my bike was prolly a few rides away from the back gears collapsing while riding....causing the entire back wheel to fall off....which to me sounds like sure death. He told me I shouldn't even ride it home...which I didn't. I walked.

I admit while I may love riding my bike...I'm not the best of keeping it in the best shape. Thank god that pedal came off before my back tire! I now have an appointment next Weds to get all of the problems solved :)

1) You mean you have an appointment next Weds to get your bank account cleaned out, more like.

2) Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a new bike???? No offense....The last time I was in BikeTek for new tires, I could have bought a new bike for as much as they cost.

3) Expensive but a bike is much like a car. A bike chain lasts 1500 miles. Bike tires can last a few hundred. I'm going to go with the "Gator Skin" Tires which prevent flats (but do slow the bike down a little bit). As far as the pedal....I'm going to do some praying it isn't going to cost that much.

4) This isn't the bike you biked across the states?

The Bike Tek guys are great, I take Mrs. Shoo's bike there. But you may want to consider Wheel Fast in Chatham.

5) BikeTek is rad. I just had them to some work on my bike last week. New tires (Continentals that have flat-protection), new brakes, a new chain, some other goodies and a full cleaning. The bike is like brand new, and the total was like $190. My bike cost $320 or so new, but it was on sale and usually goes for over $400. That said, a new bike doesn't come with tires and brakes as good as these. It's nice to be able to upgrade little by little as you need to. The cost-per-mile ratio of bike repairs is way better than cars anyway, so it's not a problem. And my bike could not be any more fun to ride after the tune-up - I love it.

6) Ben, you're not talking about "My Mother Threw Mine Away", are you? That place was a dump. It smelled and looked like someone's basement.

7) I'm really glad you wrote this because you've now scared me into taking my bike in for a check-up. It's been making some fun squeaking noises for the past couple rides...makes me slightly nervous. I biked to work today and thought my front tire was going to fall off. That would've been bad. But I made it to and from work safely.

8) Squeaking noises prolly means it just needs a good lubing or cleaning. My bike was making lots of high pitched noises yesterday but after lubing every part of the bike it went away....but now that I think about it, maybe it was trying to tell me I was about to die....hmmm....maybe you should get it checked out.

9) Haha. Thanks for the concern, Ben. I hope it just needs some lube. (I know I've been working around teenagers entirely too long because the word "lube" makes me giggle. It's sad, really.)

10) Scott...You used to love that comic store, but I guess you've moved on up to classier places now.

14) I have a good friend who had a dog run out in front of her and she was seriously injuried-I know you love your bike but please be careful!

15) I once had a cat run out in front of me. I can vividly remember looking down at the cat looking up at me as both wheels went over its body. To my utter astonishment, the darn thing just got up and ran away.

16) I'm waiting for a battery recharger to arrive from California. Once that comes and my battery is all juiced up I am planning several photos.

17) I spoke too soon about my awesome new tires. Apparently glass will make its way through anything, and I got yet another flat (4th one this month). I took the whole wheel to BikeTek and had them investigate. I was hoping they'd find a defect in the rim that was causing flats, 'cause that's easy to fix. Sadly, it was a glass shard. I really need to take a broom with me and clean off these dang Springfield sidewalks. And people, for the love of God, don't throw glass bottles onto sidewalks. Ok thanks.

19) I had 24 flat tires on my trip across the US....and that was mostly with the "flat proof" tires.

One time I found a metal stapel in my tire. One kid in our group had over 50 (on the last day I think he realized he should have replaced his rim tape in Kentucky)
