Burning Houses Springfield Style
I never realized how common house fires are. I was not a reporter before coming to Illinois.....and had never seen a house fire.
Boy how that has changed.
Today's fire....Northside of Springfield...up in Grandview.
According to Springfield Fire....it prolly started in the utility room. And took off to the attic. Luckily no one was home and the family dog....who was inside....was rescued by the fire department.
I felt like a bad ass cause I was the only member of the media there.
I never realized how common house fires are. I think I cover one once every couple of weeks. And I am just one reporter. One day....our station covered 4 fires in one day.......which included the Dana Thomas House.
Covering fires can be vey exciting...lots of noises.....lots of action. The firefighters are usually still running on some sort of adrenaline by the time we arrive. There is always amazing video to shoot. Even today with no flames....I got some great shots of the firefighters taking an axe to the siding.
On the other hand...I always put myself in the shoes of who this just happened to...I hate having to talk with family members who just lost their house. Today I opted out of even asking a guy who lived in the house for an on camera interview. He had gone to the mall....came back to find most of his first floor furniture sitting in his front yard...blackened. I instead just asked him about his dog....a 100 pound put bull.
OF NOTE: The Springfield Fire Department has an oxygen mask available just for pooches....which luckily did not need to be used today.....
The story I fronted today was a polar bear plunge into Lake Springfield. That was just fullllll of amazing video. Big props to the guy who dressed up as Moses. One comment I was forced to leave out.... I asked Moses what the feeling was like when you hit the water.......his answer: "shrinkage" haha
Quinnipiac note....Hockey beats Brown 7-1....advances to the QTR finals to take on some little unheard of school called Harvard.
Women's Basketball beats LIU.....two wins away from their first ever dance.

But if it's any consolation I can't memorize - which I'm sure is something you have to do as a reporter.
Wait...what did i just say...? j/k
