DO YOU BIKE TO WORK?

Do you bike to work? Or plan on biking to work now that gas prices are about to make you homeless? Or if biking isn't your fancy...... Are you roller blading, walking on your hands, hitchhiking, building a glider/hot air balloon, or are in the process of building a car that runs off used toothpaste? Do you live in Springfield, Illinois......or somewhere near Springfield, Illinois? If so........a certain reporter would like to talk to you....

Email me: Bhandelman@sbgnet.com or feel free to reply here on humzoo :)

1) I can direct you to a certain Dave Heinzel who bikes to work when the weather is appropriate. Or even when it's sort of not...

2) I ride the bus to work, but I live in NC. It saves a lot of money, gas and headaches though (not to mention the environment)!

3) Hey Ben,
I don't fit all your criteria but I thought I'd reply anyway. I think this is a great topic. I am a big fan of public transportation as well as cycling. I bought a road bike in the fall after maxing out my hybrid, and road several times a week for a solid 2 months until winter came.

I am very excited about starting back up (probably next week). I work out of my house so I don't have the option of riding to work but if I did work locally I wouldn't think twice. I mean, how often do you get the opportunity to show up to work with a box of donuts and sweaty?

Also, I really need to hear more about your 4,000 miles/70 day bike trip!

4) Howdy Ben. I totally ride to work every day that it's above 38 or so and not totally miserable outside. It has been awhile though since I've been able to do that, with our long cold winter. This town isn't very bike-friendly, but it just makes the ride that much more interesting. Before we moved last year, my route used to take my right through downtown. That was super fun, especially since I was usually faster than most cars.

With the gas prices the way they are now, I just want to bike even more. It's nice to know that I can get to and from work without using a drop of gasoline, and it's also nice to pass a long line of stopped cars. Yes, biking to work is totally awesome for sure.

5) Dave, have you shown Ben the bike tool? If not you really need too!

6) I am just like Denny (but better looking) and do not meet very much of your criteria, but I do love to bike. I try to bike every weekday in the warm months here in N.C. I think either I am a pansy or I do not own enough winter biking clothes to make it below 55 degrees. I have thought a few times about biking to work, but I am not sure it would work out since I am a high school teacher. See there is one thing about being the sweaty high school kid, but it is another thing about being the sweaty high school teacher. I don't think it would go over well. I can't wait for the work load to die down and the cold weather to stop so I can get back on the bike again.

7) I don't bike. And I live in DC. But I've been considering getting rid of my car lately and taking the Metro just because of gas prices...and I have a fuel-friendly four cylinder stick.

I don't think that helps...

8) I drive to work everyday and work locally. I also wear shirt and tie to work everyday so coming into work sweaty with a shirt and tie on would suck. Otherwise, I would look into biking. I am working on carpooling with some of the guys here that live close to me.

9) What is this biking you speak of? It sounds vaguely familiar.

While I do live in Springfield, I drive to and fro work. If I were in better shape (and uh... owned a bike), I could easily bike to work, as I live only about two miles or so away from my workplace. I feel somewhat guilty now...

10) I live in Nebraska, and biking to work for me would be hazardous to my health as the drivers here are all farking nuts. Seriously, they drive worse here then in LA, and I thought the drivers in LA were scary...There is also the problem that it is 15 miles to my job. If it was closer, I would entertain the risk of being hit by some manic teenage driver who thinks they can multitask by driving, chewing gum, talking and text messaging their best friend who is sitting in the passanger seat right next to them.

11) No, I don't bike to work. I live just a bit too far from work to justify biking to and fro. The Illinois Prairie Path will get me close to my office. I live about a mile from the path, and my office is about three miles from the path. Do you think I can safely ride on the shoulder of the Reagan Expressway (I-88) between Elmhurst and Warrenville? I am planning to buy a Prius during the spring. Will that count?

12) I live in Wrigleyville during the work week and do not bike to work, I take the L about 3-4 days/week. I do bike when I go to the Jewel and along Lakeshore drive for some exercise now and then. I do plan on getting another bike lock and plan to start biking more in Springfield when I am home on the weekends.....Bill, I used to live in Villa Park and ventured on the Praire Path in my drunken post college days.

Side story, 4 of my co-workers, all 23 year old college grads, and I rented a house in Villa Park. There was a bar on Roosevelt Road called Champs (not the big chain, but a little dive bar.) It was exactly one mile from our bachelor pad. We would invite friends over and have the Champs Challenge. Basically, it was a relay race. You had to bike to Champs, chug a pitcher of beer and race back. The first team back won...ahh, the good old days. It was a miracle that none of us got hit crossing Roosevelt.

13) RickMonday,
I am a few years beyond 23 but I still want to be part of the Champs Challenge! That sounds awesome. Let me know when the next one is and I will be there.

16) Hey, Ben,
I live close to Portland, Oregon. I think the city would be happy if everyone biked and there were no cars, except maybe Tri-Met the transit organization. Portland is Mecca for bikers--lots of places to ride, always adding more bike lanes. I ride the bus to the first stop in the city (about 12 mi.) and walk the rest of the way to the office--roughly 1 mi. There's a great 3 mi. loop around the river that is a biker's playground and heavily used. The walkers and the bikers have a bit of a war going to argue who gets priority and we all want to avoid nasty confrontations (as in wrecks) but generally we all get along well. My building has a "bike garage" for people to store their bikes safely during the workday and a locker-room for clothes-changing for bikers and walkers (or runners). It's a cool city for saving on gas and enjoying it.

17) Sorry K8Day - I overlooked that page awhile back. I just fixed it though, so feel free to sign up. You can get to it at:
http://www.daveheinzel.com/bike/create/

For anyone else interested in logging bike stats, check out the online bike stats tool at my old site at: http://www.daveheinzel.com/bike/ I'm planning on moving it over to its own domain name soon, but I will move over all users, stats, etc - so don't wait for that to set yours up. Spring is near, and it's a good time to get back on that bike.

19) RickMonday - I don't live that far from the Champs. In fact, the name just changed. It's now called Rivals. We used to call that location "Dirty Champs." The Champps in Lombard (yes, with two Ps...or is it two Ms) was "Clean Champs."
