DO YOU BIKE TO WORK?
Do you bike to work? Or plan on biking to work now that gas prices are about to make you homeless? Or if biking isn't your fancy...... Are you roller blading, walking on your hands, hitchhiking, building a glider/hot air balloon, or are in the process of building a car that runs off used toothpaste? Do you live in Springfield, Illinois......or somewhere near Springfield, Illinois? If so........a certain reporter would like to talk to you....

I don't fit all your criteria but I thought I'd reply anyway. I think this is a great topic. I am a big fan of public transportation as well as cycling. I bought a road bike in the fall after maxing out my hybrid, and road several times a week for a solid 2 months until winter came.
I am very excited about starting back up (probably next week). I work out of my house so I don't have the option of riding to work but if I did work locally I wouldn't think twice. I mean, how often do you get the opportunity to show up to work with a box of donuts and sweaty?
Also, I really need to hear more about your 4,000 miles/70 day bike trip!
With the gas prices the way they are now, I just want to bike even more. It's nice to know that I can get to and from work without using a drop of gasoline, and it's also nice to pass a long line of stopped cars. Yes, biking to work is totally awesome for sure.
I don't think that helps...
While I do live in Springfield, I drive to and fro work. If I were in better shape (and uh... owned a bike), I could easily bike to work, as I live only about two miles or so away from my workplace. I feel somewhat guilty now...
Side story, 4 of my co-workers, all 23 year old college grads, and I rented a house in Villa Park. There was a bar on Roosevelt Road called Champs (not the big chain, but a little dive bar.) It was exactly one mile from our bachelor pad. We would invite friends over and have the Champs Challenge. Basically, it was a relay race. You had to bike to Champs, chug a pitcher of beer and race back. The first team back won...ahh, the good old days. It was a miracle that none of us got hit crossing Roosevelt.
I am a few years beyond 23 but I still want to be part of the Champs Challenge! That sounds awesome. Let me know when the next one is and I will be there.

I live close to Portland, Oregon. I think the city would be happy if everyone biked and there were no cars, except maybe Tri-Met the transit organization. Portland is Mecca for bikers--lots of places to ride, always adding more bike lanes. I ride the bus to the first stop in the city (about 12 mi.) and walk the rest of the way to the office--roughly 1 mi. There's a great 3 mi. loop around the river that is a biker's playground and heavily used. The walkers and the bikers have a bit of a war going to argue who gets priority and we all want to avoid nasty confrontations (as in wrecks) but generally we all get along well. My building has a "bike garage" for people to store their bikes safely during the workday and a locker-room for clothes-changing for bikers and walkers (or runners). It's a cool city for saving on gas and enjoying it.

For anyone else interested in logging bike stats, check out the online bike stats tool at my old site at: http://www.daveheinzel.com/bike/ I'm planning on moving it over to its own domain name soon, but I will move over all users, stats, etc - so don't wait for that to set yours up. Spring is near, and it's a good time to get back on that bike.
