One Tough Pooch

A story made Channel 20 this week that has really really amazed me.

This has been the summer of pit bulls here in Springfield...which has even been highlighted on Humzoo.

Earlier this summer...a pit bull attacked a woman mail carrier. The dog was temporarily taken away from his owner...and then handed back.

Just this week...the dog allegedly attacked again. Well the extent of the attack is still in question. But while a man was resisting arrest...the man's dog (guilty of biting a mail carrier) apparently aproached a police officer. The police officer drew his weapon....and shot the dog in the head and the shoulder.

Here is where the story gets good......

The dog lived....a bullet in his head...and....drum roll please....WAS RETURNED TO THE OWNER. How is that allowed?

Now THAT...is one tough pooch. I would like to meet him if I didn't fear being eaten.

1) I'll bet he's (the dog) pretty darn mad...especially at anyone in a uniform. I thought the previous mail carrier that was attacked was a man. How many attacks are there each year in Springfield? It seems to be common there. What would Abe say?
Did you get my e-mail about Wayne?

2) Sounds pretty accurate for the type of dog that is associated with that name (since technically it isn't a true breed). I've seen their bodies--nothing but hard-packed muscle and a head that resembles Steve's spined soldier beetle. I'm surprised the dog is continually returned to the owner. Most areas would consider that 2x's, you're out! Even if argued the attack was justified. I fear for #3 story about this dog.

3) We recently had a pit bull attack and kill a 2 year old child. The dog wsa held at the local shelter even though the owner wanted the dog put down - they finally put the dog down - but neither the owner faced any charged nr the mother of the child - who was letting her 2 year old roam the streets at 9 p.m. at night.

4) justmeg- very sad story. Very strange in a death that most likely made headline they would not file charges.

Leslie-According to the Sangamon County Animal Control....there are over 600 bites reported every year by animals (cats, birds, and gerbils are counted in that number). And while the dogs continue to make headlines earlier this summer animal control said the number of bites was actually down a little bit. I think what is unusual this year...is that postal workers have been attacked several times by big dogs....I believe more than 6 earlier this summer....and it was back to back to back. And yes I got your email about Wayne....sweeeeet. I just can't believe the dog survived.

5) They are as tough as "The Hockey Moms", except the Pit Bulls don't wear lipstick.

6) Oh, Jesus Pete.

Anyway, I think it's clear that this man shouldn't own dogs. I'm a big believer in nurture over nature, and this man has proven he isn't a responsible human being (resisting arrest?) let alone a responsible dog owner. It seems clear to me why he owns this type of dog: it's very strong, and he's trained it to be mean.

justmeg, that's a really sad story.

7) I am curious, who exactly paid for the surgery to remove the bullet and nurse the dog back to health. Should the OWNER pay for that before getting him back? I would question the owner would have that kind of money or willing to pay for that kind of care. Just my 2 cents. ... and probably more of my 2 cents (tax dollars) that paid for the dogs care. If I am wrong, feel free to tell.

8) I agree, Mrs. Shoo. I won't make my argument against pit bulls--I know there are good ones out there and people who love them. But the ones who obviously can't handle a breed of this nature and bring out the worse in the dog--he shouldn't be allowed to own one.
