HELP! My Japanese Maple.

My dog murdered my Japanese Maple that I have been nurturing and babying and coddling for over a year.

She totally snapped the thing off about halfway down the trunk. I am finished with my panic attack and now can bring myself to ask for help.

Does anyone know if the tree can be salvaged at ALL? I've heard that they can come back in the spring, but that's only if a branch breaks. This is the entire tree.

Should I leave it in the ground? Dig it up and put it in a pot to regrow it?

I'm totally at a loss. Someone please help! He was just a baby :(

Was it a pretty clean break? You could duct tape it back together, like a tree graft. I think that's what they are called anyway. They are normally cut in a V on the trunk end and then the top piece fits into it.

Leave it in the ground, Betsy.
Snelly has a good idea, if it's a fairly clean break.
You just never know. We had a jap maple that got hit by a terrible frost. The whole thing died back. I sawed off the trunk to about 1' off the ground. The dang thing came back! It had been a grafted maple so what came back was from the root stock - a hardier type.

Leave it until late spring. It may come back to you!
