My Summer Reading Selectionz

I've got the summer reading bee in my bonnet. I hear about it everywhere, Humzoo, NPR, at work...

So I have decided to share my summer reading collection so far. There was a point where I was in the middle of about 3 different books at once (America: The Book, Wicked and War of the Worlds), but I think I am all caught up and ready to start into this stack.

I have collected these books from Amazon.com over the past few months, and this morning, I started Devil in the White City, which sounds pretty awesome so far.

I just finished The Black Dahlia on Sunday night. It was a pretty cool book, although extremely graphic. Now that I've finished it though, I find myself wishing it wasn't over, and I could read more about it. So I guess it was a pretty good book. There was this new section at the end that was written since the movie came out, and it was basically the author talking about his inspiration for the book. It pretty much proved that the guy is a total nut job, which makes his books awesome. (Same guy who wrote LA Confidential).

Since I still had the " book noir" craving after reading Dahlia, I started on Devil in the White City today.

So, I hope I can get through all these books and more this summer. I can't wait to start!

READ ON, HUMZOOERS!

1) I'm about half way through "Belong to Me" by Marisa de los Santos. It's a good novel about women and friendships.

2) I love A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and The Girls' Guide... I'm working on The Scarlet Letter right now. I just finished The Host by Stephanie Meyer (an awesome young adult author).

3) I enjoyed Devil in the White City although not quite as much as I was expecting. Pretty sinister killer though.

I have not read Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius although I am curious what you think of it. I have read another of his called You Shall Know Our Velocity and loved it....hilarious.

4) I'm half way through 'Green Eggs and Ham' and I'm wondering does anyone actually eat green eggs?

5) Probably but its probably the shell that is green and that would depend on either the species of bird or reptile, or the paint you use.

6) I really enjoyed Devil in the White City. I am still getting through Omnivore's Dilemma.

And Brian/Carrie -- in college we tried an experiment eating green eggs and ham and blue milk, among other things. Eating green and blue things is definitely challenging... we just aren't used to so there is a gut-level "ewww" reaction.

8) i'm reading "the kite runner" right now. it starts off so sad, but it's so good. i read "heartbreaking work..." and loved it, but his second book was so pretentious. i DID go to dave eggers pirate store (you heard me!) in san fran and it was hilarious. that guy is really cool.

9) oh i just noticed "the girls' guide"! that book was great! another really good book is "good in bed" by jennifer weiner. in fact, most of her books are great. they are kind of no-brainers (well, she does have one sort of murder mystery, i think it's called "little earthquakes"?), but they're really fun reads. good books for by the pool!

10) The Kite Runner, is awesome, sad but a great read. The best chick lit book is Jemima J, by Jane Green. David Sedaris has a new book out that I can't wait to get my hands on.

11) I just finished A Thousand Splendid Suns; same author as The Kite Runner. I'd also recommend Water for Elephants. I'm currently in the middle of "The River Why", which according to the blurbs on the back is similar to Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. I never read that, so I can't say. "The River Why" reminds me a lot of Tom Robbins style of narrative and content.
