MLB Hall of Fame Game R.I.P.

photo by Milo Stewart, Jr. - National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum
I am pretty out of touch with the sporting world lately, which is really sad, considering my past has been all about sports.
Today I found out from a friend at the BBHOF that MLB has decided to do away with the long standing tradition of the Hall of Fame Game at historic Doubleday Field in Cooperstown during Induction Weekend.
The final game was to be played this year... but it was rained out. What a buzz kill.
MLB says it's too hard to schedule, which I think is a load of bull because the only players who ever show up for that game are single-A players that no one has heard of anyway.
Obviously it's about $$$.
It's sad. I feel like the MLB has been making alot of decisions lately that are going to doom the sport. It's already waning in popularity, becoming third place to the NFL and the NBA... What else are they going to do to run baseball into the ground?
Allow steroids?

1) I could be wrong, but I think the Cubs were slated to play the last game but then it got rained out. Which is kinda even sadder.
2) Both my husband and I have lived about 2 hours from Cooperstown our whole lives. I've never been to the hall of fame, but he's been a couple times. The sad thing is that neither of us had ever heard anything about this tradition until this year because of the news about it being done away with. We semi-follow baseball, but we're not huge fans. That was some rock we were hiding under all those years in missing this. BTW, from what we've heard, it was a regulation major league game with the real players. Is that not the case?
3) actually it was the last exhibition game left in mlb's schedule.
4) there were always a few token roster plyers who would play...but not for much more than an inning or two. otherwise they would bring up their minor league players. keep in mind it wasn't always this way...ted williams appeared and played the entire game.
5) Oh Milo. You're always a wealth of information :)
6) I have mixed feelings about the Hall of Fame Game. On one hand, it's a real cool concept. Major League teams playing on the legendary Doubleday Field. At the same time, the game doesn't coincide with the HOF induction ceremonies. It just seems like a logistical headache getting two professional teams to Cooperstown in the middle of the season. You can only fly as close as Utica or Syracuse and then need to drive there.
7) What about Albany? I flew out of there once when I lived in Cooperstown...
