Summer Reading Update

I have gotten through a few books in the pile, and added a few to the pile.
The books on the right are books I've finished.
Holler out to Dave Heinzel & the SSHS Drama Club with Twelve Angry Men! That book was good, but I find myself very impatient with "vernacular" lately, so all the old school language just annoyed me.
The Black Dahlia was a good book, really dark and creepy. I recommend it to anyone who likes "book noir" detective stories.
Catching Genius is good. Reminds me of Jodi Piccoult, kindof sappy. The story takes place in Florida at the beach, so you know I will like it.
I read The Five People you Meet in Heaven a long time ago, but we just rented the movie from Netflix. I was really skeptical, since it was a Hallmark Channel production, but I was really impressed. The cast was great, and the acting was good. Stayed very true to the book.
I also read Devil in the White City, which is currently on loan, and not pictured. That was a really cool book. I am fascinated by the history of that stuff. There is something haunting about it, since the products that were a big part of the Chicago World's Fair are still around today.
Right now, I am reading A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. I like it so far. It reminds me of The Catcher in the Rye a little bit. I am still forming my opinion.
On the left side of the photo, you can see the books that I have left to read in my summer reading project.
I am excited to read all of them!
Question: Why do we reserve reading for summer? Shouldn't we be playing outside?

Question: Why do we reserve reading for summer? Shouldn't we be playing outside?
I'm still reading "The Historian" which I posted about ages ago. I left it at my brother's house while I was watching his kid, so I need to go get it back!
Meanwhile I'm also still reading "Little Heathens" a book about depression era farm life. I just finished the chapter where the author goes over lots of favorite recipies. Some sound amazing, lots of them have bacon grease, which I'm not sure I could find without some serious looking.
Another favorite 'outside' thing I like to do this time of year is sit on my roof and peer through the trees to watch the sun set over the ocean. Aw, Betsy, I think you've inspired a blog! Thanks!
PS Twelve Angry Men?! I didn't realize it was a book, I think I'll have to add it to my list! It must be one of the few things that started as a play and then became a book...
For some reason, I'm not burning through books as quickly as I thought I would this summer. I think humzoo might have something to do with that. I'm still working my way through the list of suggestions that people gave me a few blogs back. So far I've read:
Water for Elephants (suggested by Mrs. Shoo)
Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man (soundchick)
The BFG (Lionheart)
Blankets (Jay)
Their Eyes Were Watching God (Casey)
All of them I really enjoyed. Blankets is a neat graphic novel. I thought Daisy Fay might be more for younger readers but I couldn't put it down. Very amusing. Their Eyes Were Watching God is still lingering in my mind. That's a mark of a good book!
SallyP - Their Eyes Were Watching God sounds interesting... What's it about?
Sorry.......my teenage daughter got me stuck on the books and Edward is just about a perfect man in an imperfect world.
Sally, glad you liked Water for Elephants. It was one of my favorites lately. Their Eyes Were Watching God is AMAZING!! It's one of my favorites of all time. (That's how I classify books: lately favorites and all-time favorites.)
Justmeg, I couldn't possibly agree with you more. The Twilight series is awesome. I bought the first book and had to go get the second the next day because I stayed up all night reading the first. (Although I kind of liked Jacob only because Edward did some jerk-ish stuff.)
Weird.
I am excited about Twilight. It makes me think of BUFFY!!!
It's really good, Carrie.
Just had to plug my favorites a little, lol. Not sure what to read next though!
Has anyone read A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray? It is the first book in a series - I just finished the second book (Rebel Angels) and it was very good. Going to get the third this afternoon as well as the third book in another vampire series called House of Night. I have read Marked and Betrayed already and am gonna pick up the last one, Chosen to read tonight.
