Summer Reading Update

I have gotten through a few books in the pile, and added a few to the pile.

The books on the right are books I've finished.

Holler out to Dave Heinzel & the SSHS Drama Club with Twelve Angry Men! That book was good, but I find myself very impatient with "vernacular" lately, so all the old school language just annoyed me.
The Black Dahlia was a good book, really dark and creepy. I recommend it to anyone who likes "book noir" detective stories.
Catching Genius is good. Reminds me of Jodi Piccoult, kindof sappy. The story takes place in Florida at the beach, so you know I will like it.
I read The Five People you Meet in Heaven a long time ago, but we just rented the movie from Netflix. I was really skeptical, since it was a Hallmark Channel production, but I was really impressed. The cast was great, and the acting was good. Stayed very true to the book.
I also read Devil in the White City, which is currently on loan, and not pictured. That was a really cool book. I am fascinated by the history of that stuff. There is something haunting about it, since the products that were a big part of the Chicago World's Fair are still around today.

Right now, I am reading A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. I like it so far. It reminds me of The Catcher in the Rye a little bit. I am still forming my opinion.

On the left side of the photo, you can see the books that I have left to read in my summer reading project.

I am excited to read all of them!

Question: Why do we reserve reading for summer? Shouldn't we be playing outside?

1) The greatest compromise is to read outside, in the shade! I hate the bright sun glare you get off your book when you read in the sun. Plus I'm super white (darn office job) and I just burn, never really tan so laying out has never really caught on for me.

I'm still reading "The Historian" which I posted about ages ago. I left it at my brother's house while I was watching his kid, so I need to go get it back!

Meanwhile I'm also still reading "Little Heathens" a book about depression era farm life. I just finished the chapter where the author goes over lots of favorite recipies. Some sound amazing, lots of them have bacon grease, which I'm not sure I could find without some serious looking.

Another favorite 'outside' thing I like to do this time of year is sit on my roof and peer through the trees to watch the sun set over the ocean. Aw, Betsy, I think you've inspired a blog! Thanks!

PS Twelve Angry Men?! I didn't realize it was a book, I think I'll have to add it to my list! It must be one of the few things that started as a play and then became a book...

2) I'm so glad you brought up Dave's acting debut in Twelve Angry Men. I'd forgotten about that.

For some reason, I'm not burning through books as quickly as I thought I would this summer. I think humzoo might have something to do with that. I'm still working my way through the list of suggestions that people gave me a few blogs back. So far I've read:

Water for Elephants (suggested by Mrs. Shoo)
Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man (soundchick)
The BFG (Lionheart)
Blankets (Jay)
Their Eyes Were Watching God (Casey)

All of them I really enjoyed. Blankets is a neat graphic novel. I thought Daisy Fay might be more for younger readers but I couldn't put it down. Very amusing. Their Eyes Were Watching God is still lingering in my mind. That's a mark of a good book!

3) Lionheart - Twelve Angry Men was actually the play, I should've specified that. Probably another reason why it was a frustrating read. I couldn't keep the jurors straight... I just kept imagining all of them looking like Dave mopping his brow in the SSHS yearbook photo!

SallyP - Their Eyes Were Watching God sounds interesting... What's it about?

4) It's an adventure story, a romance, and everything in between. It's set in the early 1900s South and is the story of an African-American woman's journey through life. Though if you're tired of vernacular, I would avoid this book because the whole thing is written in vernacular.

5) TWILIGHT! it will suck you in and then you will have to get the second book and then the third and then you will anxiously await the fourth all while falling in love with Edward and watching the movie trailer pre-view over and over again wondering why the Edward they picked does not feel right and knowing that it definately looks nothing like the Edward you pictured in your mind.

Sorry.......my teenage daughter got me stuck on the books and Edward is just about a perfect man in an imperfect world.

6) I'm reading AHWoSG also, Betsy. Where are you in the book?

Sally, glad you liked Water for Elephants. It was one of my favorites lately. Their Eyes Were Watching God is AMAZING!! It's one of my favorites of all time. (That's how I classify books: lately favorites and all-time favorites.)

Justmeg, I couldn't possibly agree with you more. The Twilight series is awesome. I bought the first book and had to go get the second the next day because I stayed up all night reading the first. (Although I kind of liked Jacob only because Edward did some jerk-ish stuff.)

11) Leslie and Betsy, I've had Devil... for a while now and haven't read it. I'm going to get to it soon because of your reviews.
It's really good, Carrie.

12) I'm going to jump in because I am a Twilight nerd. I got sucked in (get it?) almost a year ago. I've read all the books numerous times because I am a geek. (And I also liked Jacob better at first.) I just finished The Host and it was really good too!

Just had to plug my favorites a little, lol. Not sure what to read next though!

13) Ohhh - I wanna read The Host. I really like the way she writes.

Has anyone read A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray? It is the first book in a series - I just finished the second book (Rebel Angels) and it was very good. Going to get the third this afternoon as well as the third book in another vampire series called House of Night. I have read Marked and Betrayed already and am gonna pick up the last one, Chosen to read tonight.
