1st Sewing Project - Complete

If you remember, I posted a while back about my first official sewing project with my new sewing machine.

Read all about it here:
http://www.humzoo.com/betsyradish/blog/63/

Well, last night, I finished it, and I am pretty proud of it.
Here are photos of the finished project:

It's a baby blanket wrap, complete with pocket-for-baby, hood, little tassel ear thingies (that's my favorite part), and extra-wide absorbent wings (just kidding).

Mostly, it was pretty easy. The patterns and directions were well written and easy to follow. The only parts I had trouble with were when the fleece got to be 3 or 4 layers stacked up that needed to be sewn together. I had to do some hand stitching for those parts. Also, the bias tape (the pink stuff around the edges) was really hard to sew on where the fabric was thick.

It might look a little jacked up in some areas, but that adds to the charm, right?

I hope Miss Kris and her new baby will love it. Because I love them!

They will be getting a package at their door in Colorado very soon!

Ha, you did a great job! It does kind of look like a maxi pad! ("extra-wide absorbent wings"). Too funny!

The other day I found a pattern for cloth maxi pads. It weirded me out a bit.

Apparently a lot of people use them...like cloth diapers. I can't imagine. The idea actually makes me somewhat uncomfortable.

Here are some examples.

Here are the patterns in case you decide to make your own.

Great job, Betsy! You have talent in the sewing room that rivals your talent in the kitchen with cooking and baking. Kris and the baby will love it and it will always make them think of you when it is used. Gifts like these are the best!

Glad Rags are a popular brand of reusable pad. I was a hippie in a former life.

I'm all about reusing things, but I don't know that I could reuse pads. They're gross enough the way they are--like a diaper--but to reuse them? Maybe I'm just too stuck in my box.

Courtney - you were never a hippie - LOL

Doesn't sound much different than cloth diapers and needed for less time. The pioneer women used any old rag they could find. I can't imagine dealing with it for months on end with little water for washing, etc. Even reusable ones sound better than that! :)

A friend of mine is convinced that some day she will be a millionaire when she invents wash-and-reuse tampons. She is still in the R&D stage trying to figure out how to get them BACK into the little tube after they're washed. I am sure she would love this conversation.

If someone came up with that, I might consider it. Pads just bother me.

Wonderful Job! I’m sure they will like it very much!

In response to the Maxi pad comment; the washable kind do exist and have for quite some time now. Even though this is a souring subject for me to talk about, I did work in a nursing home for 2 years. The residents who required the use of these would have to use the washable kind provided by the nursing home unless their family bought them the disposable kind.

That turned out fantastic! I love the color and pattern combination. It is unexpected, but in a good way.

Have you noticed the lack of male reponses since the discussion of glad rags began? Yes, I understand that pioneer women and probably even cave women might have had the need, but in 2008??? They do come in interesting colors and patterns though. I'll take a dozen in red..lol.

When I first saw them, I thought they were little purses or something. Color me surprised when I realized they weren't.

Mrs. Shoo...I have a visual of you carrying your lipstick and spare change around in one. Maybe you could create a new one with a pocket just for that. Ewwww...I just grossed myself out.

Leslie--I was noticing that too. Guess we know how to keep them away! LOL

Great job on the baby blanket wrap, I have tried my hand at the no sew fleece scarves and blankets so kudos to you on the project.

Ladies, what about the Cup ( http://www.softcup.com/)? hehe! Betts, E - Love the kimono/blanket/wrap? Do they come in size grown-up?
Jess   Friday, August 1, 2008
Just when I thought that the soaking bucket under the sink was bad, you come up with the softcup?
Robby T   Monday, August 4, 2008
GREAT job Betts!!!! Did you use a straight line stitch for all of this? I might try a denim needle for the thick parts and don't skimp on quality. The sharper and stronger the better, and easier on your machine. Just a thought, not like I've ever sewn anything. ;-) oh boy.

As far as the rest of this conversation goes... That's gross. Imy mom used reusable diapers on one of us. Which I can sort of understand, but as far as the other items mentioned... gross. And this is totally from a guys perspective. But that just doesn't seem right... I mean i guess if that was all that you had it would be better than nothing... but... ok... I'm feeling ill. I don't want to talk about this anymore.

Oh my gosh GREAT job!! I'm blown away, good show for a first time. It's even good for a 30th time! My little seamstress budday.
