MLB 2012 Game #8: Braves vs. Brewers

A quiet rise back into contention. That's probably the most accurate way to summarize the Milwaukee Brewers season. With the controversy surrounding Ryan Braun's failed drug test, his 50-game suspension, then having that suspension overturned prior to the season, the Brewers stumbled out of the gates. While they sit 14 1/2 games of the pace in the National League Central, they find themselves back in the wild card race. It's a matter of days until the Cincinnati Reds clinch the NL Central, but at 71-71, the Brewers sit four games out in the wild card race. The Atlanta Braves are currently one of the two NL wild card teams while the St. Louis Cardinals are the other.

Tonight, the Braves send former Chicago Cubs pitcher, Paul Maholm (12-9, 3.67 ERA) to the mound. The Brewers will attempt to complete the series sweep and to rise above the .500 mark by sending Yovani Gallardo (14-8, 3.76 ERA) to the hill.

The current NL Central standings look like this:

Cincinnati Reds 86-57 .601 ---
St. Louis Cardinals 75-67 .528 10.5 GB
Pittsburgh Pirates 72-69 .511 13 GB
Milwaukee Brewers 71-71 .500 14.5 GB
Chicago Cubs 55-87 .387 30.5 GB
Houston Astros 45-97 .317 40.5 GB
