The MLB 2012 Playoffs Begin: Wild Card Games

Major League Baseball's playoff format is different in 2012. One additional wild card team was added to each league. Each league will send three division winners and two wild card teams into the postseason. That's a total of 10 teams vying to win the World Series. With the inclusion of one extra team per league, the playoffs will feature a one-game playoff between the wild cards.

The National League wild card game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Central in Atlanta, Georgia. The Atlanta Braves (94-68) will host the St. Louis Cardinals (88-74). The Braves' last postseason appearance was during 2010 when they were defeated by the San Francisco Giants in the NLDS. The St. Louis Cardinals are the defending 2011 World Series champions. The winner of today's game will face the Washington Nationals in the NLDS beginning Sunday, October 7.

The American League wild card game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Central in Arlington, Texas. The Texas Rangers (93-69) will host the Baltimore Orioles (93-69). The Rangers are the two-time defending American League Champions (2010-2011). The Orioles' last postseason appearance was during 1997 when they were defeated by the Cleveland Indians in the ALCS. The winner of tonight's game will face the New York Yankees in the ALDS beginning Sunday, October 7.
