The MLB 2012 Playoffs: National League Championship Series

Monumental collapse. The Washington Nationals seized an earlier lead during Game 5 of the NLDS at home last night. With three runs in the bottom of the first, and three more in the third, the National League East champions seemed destined for champagne showers.

But, the St. Louis Cardinals chipped away at the lead slowly. One in the fourth and two in the fifth. One in the seventh and one more in the eighth.

The Nationals needed insurance. In the bottom of the eighth, they received just that when Kurt Suzuki singled to drive in Adam LaRoche. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough. St. Louis found themselves one strike away from elimination, not unlike during the 2011 World Series. The Cardinals proceeded to score four runs in the top of the ninth. Washington was unable to answer.

The 2012 NLDS is set between the St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants. The last time the Giants reached the NLCS was in 2010 when they defeated the Philadelphia en route to a World Series title over the Texas Rangers. The last time the Cardinals reached the NLCS was in 2011 when they defeated the Milwaukee Brewers en route to a World Series title over the Texas Rangers.
