CCIW Football Champions 2012At the beginning of the school year, I mentioned that I'm not much of a college football fan. I attended a Division III school, and quite honestly, athletics aren't a big deal at that level. While I would attend the occasional game here and there, it was never a big draw for me. I always preferred watching the Chicago Bears play instead.
When college football began this year, I mentioned that the Elmhurst College Blue Jays won their season opener over Loras College, 38-0. At the time, I didn't give it much of a thought. Of the course of the next several weeks, the Bluejays kept winning. And then they kept winning after that.
This afternoon, the Bluejays defeated the Illinois Wesleyan University Titans, 35-31. As a result, they won their first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) championship since the 1980 season. Of course, they must split this title with the North Central Cardinals and the Wheaton College Thunder. All three teams finished with identical 6-1 conference records. Elmhurst College finished its season 9-1 overall, North Central was 8-2, and Wheaton finished 8-2. Elmhurst's only loss was to North Central in late-September. The Cardinals won, 44-10.
