Thanksgiving 2012: Who Travels the Farthest?

The other day I posted a blog about our annual holiday party with friends. Yes, the holidays are just around the corner. This is the time of year when people start to travel substantial distances to visit their families. Others travel to run away from them. Since Thanksgiving will fall on the earliest possible date this year, people will start disappearing from my office this Friday.

We are fortunate that the holidays do not require us to travel great distances. We host Thanksgiving at our house, so the extent of my travel is walking from upstairs to downstairs. With a few exceptions, nobody really needs to come from any distance to spend the day with us. In total, we have about 20 people spend the day with us.

I posed these same questions every year since Humzoo has been around, but it's interesting to see how plans change year to year. Does anyone have any specific plans for Thanksgiving? Who will travel the greatest distance for the holiday?

Thanksgiving is "my" holiday. I go all out. I host it and usually have anywhere from 30-50 people at my house. The majority of them are NOT family. lol This year I am down to 6-7!!! I'm not sure I can do Thanksgiving for that few of people. : / I should note that 5 of those people actually LIVE HERE. UGH! Now I am depressed again.

I believe Steve and I will travel the greatest distance this year. We will travel from having hosted the Thanksgiving meal for 40 years to going to our daughter's home for the big day!! That is a long way to go!! We're really looking forward to our first...and hopefully not last....Thanksgiving in SallyPant's and Andrew's partially finished church home, eating from the beautiful table that Andrew made with his very own very gifted hands. SallyPants and Andrew are bravely hosting his family and her family and we are all excited about this new arrangement!

Last Thanksgiving Bev and I along with her parents ate Thanksgiving Dinner at our daughter's family home; however, since then two things have occurred: My wife's mother has passed away and our daughter is in her ninth month of pregnancy so we are going to dine at our son-in-law's parents home along his parents and his brother and nephew. The Christmas Meal is scheduled to be at our daughter and son-in-laws because on December 16th our Grandson is scheduled to arrive and his arrival dictates dining at their home.

As usual, we're heading to the Detroit area. Always the same mileage, but depending on traffic/construction/weather, it can take us 4.5 hours, or it can take 7. I'll be cooking again this year--9 people this time.
