Superstitions

Do you consider yourself a superstitious person? I don't. Susan isn't either, except for the salt over the shoulder bit. I did wear dirty stir-ups during high school baseball games, but that was mainly for laughs. It's only funny a high school baseball way.

Over lunch I was listening to Mike Murphy on The Score. He's a huge Cubs fans, but an annoying host. Anyway, he believes in jinxes. He always says that he hopes the Cubs "play in late October." He refuses to say "World Series." He doesn't want to jinx them.

Ed Farmer, the White Sox play-by-play radio personality refuses to mention when a White Sox pitcher is throwing a no-hitter. When a no-hitter is broken up, he'll say something like, "I didn't say anything. Not me."

Do you have any superstitions? If so, please share.

1) Talking about servers, appliances or electronics like a TV within hearing distance ... becaues they listen and break because you mention you have some extra $$ or nothing has gone wrong with them. :)

2) I have to carry a bag of peanut m&ms with me on every flight I go on. I don't know why or when it started, I don't know why they have to be peanut and I can't eat them until I am safely back at my house.

3) I have a thing about ravens. Whenever I see a flock of them I flip out. If they roost in a tree close to where I am, then I really wig out as it usually means something bad is about to happen. Within a week of seeing them, something bad does happen...

I also have one specific necklace I wear. It is a seven pointed star, which is an ancient symbol for protection. I only take it off when I dye my hair...

4) I have a lot of rituals (thanks, OCD), but no real superstitions. I'll throw salt over my shoulder, or if my nose itches, I'll joke that someone is thinking about me, but that's about the extent of my superstitiousness.

5) Ok, I have the weirdest one: Every time I see a semi-truck carrying a load of hay or alfalfa bales going to opposite way on a freeway, I have to wish on them. Then, I can't look behind me until the semi is out of sight. This can be a long time if you run into one on the desert flats.

I think this superstition started when I was four. We were riding in a car and I'd made a new friend and we were going somewhere in a car, and she saw a semi loaded with hay and said, "We have to make a wish!" From there I think my brain made up the rules. The older I get the more I think she just said that and it had nothing to do with the semi truck load of hay.

Oh and you can wish for more when it's an alfalfa truck, hay/straw has lower wish power. ;-)

6) Saying someone's full name out loud three times in a row. I know that was part of a horror movie several years ago, but I didn't see it. But a couple times in recent years I've repeated the name of someone I hadn't heard from in quite a while, and within a day or so, I either heard directly from them or heard their name come up in a conversation in a way that I didn't initiate. I'm sometimes tempted to try it again, but I'm afraid that their name would come up in a bad context, as in..."did you hear about the horrible accident that xxx was in", etc.

7) You're right, Lionheart, that's the weirdest one!! LOL That's a cute story about how it started.

I have a really dumb one. Whenever we are leaving to go on a trip, I have to pat my husband on his right knee and say "Let's have a safe trip." And I have to do it at the very beginning of the trip, preferably in the driveway! I'm sure the trip will end in disaster if I don't. (When I woke up this morning, I never dreamed that I would be telling the whole world about that dumb superstition today!!!!)

8) I love yours, Nancy...it's sweet. Does it give other people luck on their trip if they pat Steve's knee or just you? :)

Lionheart's is a very unique one. :) I guess I do have to confess one other one years ago. I had a special arrowhead necklace given to me by one good friend and made by another one. The giver, Paula, and I were convinced it was good luck to wear it on job interviews and we would exchange it as needed for the next job application. We never lost one with it worn! :)

10) Guess Denny won't pat it, then, when he and Niki come visiting and get ready to head back to NC. :)
