Cold Steel at Wrigley Field

On Wednesday, the Chicago Blackhawks announced that Wrigley Field will host the next Winter Classic on January 1, 2009. The Blackhawks will face the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Redwings in a regular season outdoor match. With the increased popularity of hockey in Chicago, and the city's push to host the Olympics, this is a major boost for the local sports scene.

Over the past few years, Wrigley Field has hosted a number of events other than Chicago Cubs baseball. A few years ago, Jimmy Buffett performed the first concert at the north side ballpark. Last year, The Police played two concerts there. On July 29, the Peoria Chiefs (managed by former Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg) and Kane County Cougars will play one game at Wrigley Field. Wrigley Field was also the original home of the Chicago Bears before moving to Soldier Field.

Anyone planning to buy tickets? I'll be trying.

I really hope this turns out well. The first Winter Classic was alot of fun to watch and will be hard to top. But, two original six teams, in a historic venue, in Chicago ... already has the makings to be great.
