Networking websites

I am curious to hear what professional and social networking websites my fellow Humzooers are using. Over the last year, I have been joining a number of these sites for various reasons.

Some of the sites I joined are: linkedin.com, facebook.com, twitter.com, and pulse.plaxo.com. Do you belong to any others, besides Humzoo, of course.

After meeting a former co-worker for dinner, she asked if I was listed on linkedin.com. So far, that has proven somewhat beneficial by showing professional connections. I try to keep my profile as professional as possible. My goal is not to treat that site like Facebook. I only link to people whom I have strong working relationships.

Facebook is a different story. For quite a while, I avoided joining this site. Initially, I figured this was just a MySpace site geared toward college kids. Though partially true, I eventually joined. As I've mentioned before, I am the adviser for the Elmhurst College yearbook. For years, I heard the students on staff suggest they could be reached easier through their Facebook pages. I joined a while back, and so far so good. Several months ago, I read an article in the Chicago Tribune which stated that the editor encouraged newspaper staff to create Facebook pages. Someone posted a comment which suggested Facebook was old news, and that Twitter was the wave of the future.

So, I joined Twitter. Initially, I didn't understand quite how it worked. After following several people and being followed by others, I really enjoy this site. At this point, i don't know too many people who are using this site, but I will assume that number will grow over time.

Another site that I was invited to join was Pulse Plaxo. I don't use this site too often. It is still considered a beta site, but appears similar to LinkedIn.

Are you a member of any others? Which sites do you prefer? Also, if you are interested in any of my sites, just visit my About page.

1) I'm on linkedin, but kind of as a joke, just to keep in touch with some of my old coworkers who aren't on any of the other social networking sites.

I check my myspace account every once in awhile but rarely use it anymore.

Facebook? I am totally addicted! I've been able to reconnect with so many of my friends from highschool, sorority sisters, family...I love it!

I just got an invitation to join Pulse but haven't done so yet. Between humzoo, facebook and my mom's board, I don't think I can keep up with another networking site!

2) Because I am a member of a Chorus in St. Louis but live in Springfield, I have joined a few so that I can be in touch with members in that area. The following are also in my about page. myspace, facebook and linkedin, I manage two myspace accounts, one for the chorus and then for myself. From a point of marketing our chorus, I have liked myspace the most for that since we have fellow barbershoppers also on myspace and can post bulletins for upcoming performances. I think facebook is catching on in that way as well with having the groups and fans option. I use humzoo the most for my personal life though and drop the name humzoo where ever I go (see my nashville blog, I even bribed the hotel with DBCC cookies) I only have a few connections with Linkedin but see the potential if job hunting etc.

3) I actually got my current job through LinkedIn when I was contacted by a recruiter who saw my profile there! I think Facebook and Twitter are good places to be. I also like Yelp, which is a social network that allows users to review restaurants and other businesses, although you can still read reviews and get most of the benefits of Yelp without actually having to register.

4) Shoo has Twitter, and he is always playing on it. I think his name on it is gotshoo (that's his usual screen name) if you want to find him. I have a Facebook and a Myspace to keep in touch with friends from high school and college. It's easier than keeping updated emails on everyone. The only problem with my Myspace and Facebook is my students are always trying to find them. I try to keep them as private as possible and also as appropriate as possible, but the occasional student finds them and makes a big deal of it.

5) Humzoo is sufficient for me. I have several email accounts for various reasons and it's all I can do to keep up with them AND Humzoo. I'd have to lessen my baking if I spent much more time in more network communities. And besides, when you already enjoy the best...why spend time finding more?? :)

6) I have a Facebook account, but I only get on a couple of times a month. I twitter sporadically (and probably wouldn't at all without Twitterific). I used to have a myspace account but deleted that because of somethings they did (deleting accounts of certain types of people w/ no cause). I have a linked in account, but again, I'm rarely on. There's just too much out there.

7) Well, I originally got a MySpace account...

www.myspace.com/igna_sivad

...when my sister asked me to "spy" on her then 13-year-old son, Cody, but I do enjoy it because it allows me to keep up with the younger members of our family, as well as some of our friends. I also have a Facebook account. Bill has both of these plus his photography site (www.howardsend.com), and I'm sure he belongs to a few more sites, mostly technical or just plain weird. HA!

Oh, and we do have our own FrontPage masterpiece at: family.howardsend.com

9) I have a facebook and myspace account. I love facebook, and I've reconnected with some high school friends on there, which has been fun. I don't like MySpace a whole bunch, but I did reconnect with an old friend on there, too. I probably check MySpace 1x/month and my facebook multiple times a day.

10) I am on a number of sites. The ones I find most useful though are Twitter and Last.fm. Twitter if I need to shoutout a question to some of my html -css friends and last.fm to find new music.

We're already connected on twitter, but you might be interested in some of the people I follow. They're all in the edu-web spectrum.

Also checkout http://www.bloghighed.org/, my code runs rss aggregator.
